American League Batter of the Day—Shohei Ohtani of the Angels hit two home runs, a sacrifice fly and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 9-6, 12-inning win over the Rangers.
Ohtani earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 11.9 for the season, second among all players, behind Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman (12.0). Ohtani also ranks second among AL pitchers behind Gausman and extends his lead among AL batters, ahead of Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5).
This is Ohtani’s 10th Player of the Game honor of 2023 and his fifth as designated hitter—the other five have come as a starting pitcher. Ohtani has now earned 6.2 of his Box-Toppers points as a batter and 5.7 as a starting pitcher. Ohtani qualifies to rank among both pitchers and batters in Box-Toppers season player rankings because more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors have come in both categories—currently 50 percent as a batter and 50 percent as a pitcher.
Ohtani now has most of his 2023 Box-Toppers points as a batter (52.1 percent). In the past two seasons, Ohtani earned the bulk of his points as starting pitcher. In 2021, he earned 4.0 of his 16.1 points as a batter (24.8 percent). And in 2022, he earned 5.0 of his 24.7 points as a batter (20.2 percent).
Ohtani’s 6.2 Box-Toppers points as batter would rank second among AL batters, behind Judge’s 7.5 and just ahead (on a tiebreaker) of Isaac Paredes of the Rays (6.2). His 5.7 points as a pitcher would rank 15th among AL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Monday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Evan Longoria.
Debut—Rockies pitcher Connor Seabold made his Box-Toppers debut Monday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Seabold (6IP 6H R BB 6K ND in the 4-3, 10-inning win over the Red Sox) made his Major League debut Sept. 11, 2021, and was playing in his 21st career game.
Scoring—Miller earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Longoria earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Ohtani earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Monday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
