Mets pitcher Justin Verlander is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Wednesday, Nolan Gorman of the Cardinals extends his lead among National League batters in 2023 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day
Verlander struck out seven over eight innings, allowing one run, three hits and one walk, in the 5-1 win over the White Sox.
Verlander earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 6.0 for the season, 53rd among all players and 23rd among NL pitchers.
Verlander now has 238.6 career Box-Toppers points, fifth-most among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails fourth-ranked player Pedro Martinez (244.8) by 6.2 points. (It should be noted that Martinez’s career total is only from 1995, when tracking began. If his entire career from 1992 were tracked, Martinez is projected to have 270 points.)
Verlander ranks third among active players in career points, behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (269.4) and Mets pitcher Max Scherzer (246.7).
American League Player of the Day
Twins pitcher Kenta Maeda struck out nine over 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, three hits and no walks, in the 6-3 win over the Mariners. Maeda did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Mariners tied the game after he exited.
Maeda earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 4.7 for the season, 42nd among AL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day
Mike Tauchman of the Cubs homered, hit two doubles and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 8-3 win over the Nationals.
American League Batter of the Day
There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Wednesday because no AL batter won Player of the Game honors.
Rankings
Nolan Gorman of the Cardinals extends his 2023 Box-Toppers points lead among NL batters after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.
Gorman (HR 2-4 R 4BI in the 6-4 win over the Marlins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.5 for the season. He ranks ahead of second-place NL batter Christian Yelich (6.5). Gorman ranks 27th among all players and third among all batters, behind Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (13.9) and Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5). (Though Judge and Gorman have the same Box-Toppers point total, Judge ranks higher because he has more 2022 Box-Toppers points—13.2 vs. 5.0.)
Notable
Padres pitcher Yu Darvish now has 129.0 career Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Thursday.
Darvish (6IP 4H 0R 3BB 7K W in the 2-0 win over the Blue Jays) ranks 39th among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 1.0 point Wednesday, he passes two players on Box-Toppers “all-time” points list—Vladimir Guerrero (128.3) and Trevor Hoffman (128.4). Darvish now trails 38th-ranked player Jason Giambi (133.4).
Darvish ranks 12th among active players in career points, seventh among active NL pitchers. His 5.0 points in 2023 is 31st among NL pitchers.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
