White Sox pitcher Mike Clevinger is Monday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Monday, Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler rises to 10th place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day
Clevinger pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing one run, six hits and no walks, in the 6-1 win over the Nationals.
Clevinger earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 10.4 for the season, 37th among all players and 19th among American League pitchers.
Clevinger becomes the 45th player this season to reach 10 Box-Toppers points. It is his fourth season with 10 or more points. He also did it:
In 2017 with Cleveland, 11.4 points, ninth among AL pitchers.
In 2018 with Cleveland, 13.7 points, 14th among AL pitchers.
In 2019 with Cleveland, 17.4 points, ninth overall and sixth among AL pitchers.
He had 6.4 points in 2022 with the Padres, 43rd among NL pitchers.
National League Player of the Day
J.D. Martinez of the Dodgers hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, in the 8-3 win over the Tigers. Martinez went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in five runs.
Martinez earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.7 for the season, 20th among NL batters.
American League Batter of the Day
Ryan O'Hearn of the Orioles doubled and went 5-for-5, scoring once and driving in two runs, in the 8-7 win over the Astros.
National League Batter of the Day
There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Monday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter J.D. Martinez.

Rankings
Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler rises to 10th place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Monday.
Wheeler (6IP 3H R 2BB 6K W in the 7-1 win over the Braves) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 14.7 for the season. He ranks fifth among NL pitchers.
Streak
Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright has now earned Box-Toppers points in 12 straight seasons after earning his first Player of the Game honor of 2023 Monday.
Wainwright (7IP 4H 0R 2BB 3K W in the 1-0 win over the Brewers) earned his first points in 2006 with the Cardinals, but earned no points in 2011, missing that season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. His current 12-season streak began in 2012. (Had he not missed earning points in 2011, this would be his 18th straight season earning Box-Toppers points.)
Wainwright now has 153.3 career Box-Toppers points, 23rd among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. With his 1.0 point Monday, he passes three players on Box-Toppers “all-time” career points list—Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale (152.3), Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole (152.3) and Greg Maddux (152.7). (It should be noted that Maddux would have an estimated 250 career Box-Toppers points if his entire career from 1986 were tracked.) While Wainwright had the same 152.3 career point total as both Sale and Cole, he ranked lowest among the three because he had the fewest 2023 points.
Wainwright now trails 22nd-ranked player Mike Mussina (155.6) on the career points list.
Wainwright now ranks sixth among active players in career points and second among active NL pitchers, behind Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers (269.4).
There were three seasons Wainwright ranked among the overall top 10 in season Box-Toppers points, all with the Cardinals.
In 2010, he had 19.7 Box-Toppers points, fourth overall and second among NL pitchers.
In 2013, he had 20.2 points, second overall and second among NL pitchers.
In 2014, he had 18.7 points, eighth overall and fourth among NL pitchers.
Wainwright had 10.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 25th among NL pitchers.
Debut
Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Monday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:
Reds pitcher Connor Phillips (7IP 3H 2R BB 7K W in the 7-3 win over the Twins) made his Major League debut Sept. 5 and was playing in his third career game.
Royals pitcher Jackson Kowar (1IP H 0R 0BB 2K W in the 6-4 win over the Guardians) made his Major League debut June 7, 2021, and was playing in his 36th career game.
Scoring
Clevinger earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.
Martinez earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day.
O’Hearn earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day.
All of Monday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
