About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Ohtani has earned 44.1 Box-Toppers points over 2022 and 2023. He ranked second among all players in 2022 with 24.7 Box-Toppers points and third among all players in 2023 with 19.4 points. Ohtani ranked second among American League pitchers both seasons (2002 and 2023). In 2023, his 19.4 points also ranked first among AL batters. He did not rank among AL batters in 2022 because he earned the overwhelming majority of his Box-Toppers points as a pitcher.
This is the second consecutive year Ohtani has led players over a two-year period. After 2022, he led players over 2021 and 2022 with 40.8 points.
Ranking second among all players over the past two seasons is Astros pitcher Justin Verlander with 38.4 Box-Toppers points. Verlander led all players in 2022 with 26.0 points and had 12.4 points in 2023, 13th among AL pitchers. Verlander played for the Astros in 2022 and began 2023 with the Mets before being traded back to the Astros at mid-season.
Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt, who led AL pitchers in 2023 with 20.1 Box-Toppers points, ranks fifth among AL pitchers over the past two seasons with 31.1 points over 2022 and 2023. He had 11.0 points in 2022 with the Mets, 19th among National League pitchers.
Gallen leads NL pitchers over past two seasons
Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen leads all NL players in Box-Toppers points over the past two seasons with 35.4, third among all players. Gallen ranked eighth overall both seasons. In 2022, he had 18.7 points and in 2023, he had 16.7 points. In 2022, he ranked fifth among NL pitchers and in 2023, he ranked fourth.
Braves pitcher Spencer Strider, who led players in 2023 with 21.1 Box-Toppers points, ranks fourth among all players over the past two seasons with 35.4 Box-Toppers points, second among NL pitchers. Strider had 13.4 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 13th among NL pitchers.
Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara, who led NL pitchers in 2022 with 21.1 Box-Toppers points, ranks fifth among NL pitchers over the past two seasons with 28.1 points. He had 7.0 points in 2023, 31st among NL pitchers.
Ohtani leads AL batters over past two seasons
Ohtani far and away leads AL batters with 44.1 Box-Toppers points over the past two seasons, ahead of second-place Aaron Judge of the Yankees (25.2). Ohtani qualified to rank among batters in 2023 because more than 25 percent of his Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors came as a batter. In fact, in 2023, he earned Player of the Game honors 16 times—eight times as a batter and eight times as a pitcher, exactly 50 percent for both and so qualified to rank in both categories. He also neatly split his Box-Toppers points in 2023—9.7 came as a pitcher and 9.7 came as a batter.
In 2022, Ohtani did not qualify to rank among batters because he earned only four of his 17 Player of the Game honors as a batter (23.5 percent). As a consequence, even though he had more Box-Toppers points over 2021 and 2022 than any other AL batter (40.8), he did not qualify to rank in that category.
If Ohtani were ranked based on the Box-Toppers points he earned only as a batter, he would have 14.7 points over the past two seasons (5.0 in 2022 and 9.7 in 2023). That would put him in fifth place among AL batters over the past two seasons. Conversely, if Ohtani were ranked based on the Box-Toppers points he earned only as a pitcher, he would have 29.4 points over the past two seasons (19.7 in 2022 and 9.7 in 2023). That would put him in sixth place among AL pitchers over the past two seasons.
Ohtani signed a free-agent deal to join the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024. He underwent his second career elbow ligament surgery in the offseason and is not expected to pitch until 2025, but is expected to be able to bat in 2024, serving as a designated hitter.
Aaron Judge of the Yankees led AL batters in 2022 with 13.2 Box-Toppers points. He ranks second among AL batters over the past two seasons with 25.2 points. He had 12.0 points in 2023, third among AL batters.
Alonso leads NL batters over past two seasons
Pete Alonso of the Mets leads NL batters over the past two seasons with 26.9 Box-Toppers points. He led NL batters in two consecutive seasons with 14.9 in 2022 and 12.0 in 2023. Alonso ranks ahead of Mookie Betts of the Dodgers, whose 20.2 points over the past two seasons, ranks second in the category.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
