While it’s early in the season, batters are on pace to have their lowest share of Box-Toppers points earned compared to pitchers in any season since tracking began in 1995. Batters currently have earned 112.7 of the total 339.9 points awarded this season, just 33.2 percent of all points. (Pitchers have 227.2 points or 66.8 percent). The all-time low share for batters in a single season is 38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.) While batters have struggled reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
In the 95 games played in the past week, batters won Player of the Game honors 27 times (28.4 percent) vs. pitchers who won 68 times (71.6 percent). Pitchers’ share of Player of the Game honors won for the entire season grew from 66.1 percent last week to 68.0 percent this week (193 in 284 total games).
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
