Box-Toppers almanac
Players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2024—364 (last week there were 322).
Players with more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points—84 (last week there were 60).
Players who’ve made their Box-Toppers debut so far in 2024 (earning their first career Player of the Game honor)—42 (last week there were 39).
Games completed so far in 2024—565, an average of 37.7 per team.
Percentage of scheduled season completed—23.3.
Pitchers earned Player of the Game honors in 64 of the 92 games this week (69.6 percent) while batters won in 28 games (30.4 percent). (These were the exact same numbers last week for the games between April 26 and May 2.) Pitchers increased their share of Player of the Game honors won overall from 67.2 percent last week to 67.6 percent this week (382 times in 565 total games). Batters have won 183 times in 565 games (32.4 percent).
Batters have won 225.5 of the total 675.6 Box-Toppers points awarded this season. Their share of points decreased from last week (33.7 percent) to this week (33.4 percent). (Pitchers have 450.1 points or 66.6 percent.) The all-time low share of points for batters in a single season is 38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.) While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009 and is on track to plummet to a record-shattering low in 2024.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
