Tanner Houck of the Red Sox rises to lead AL pitchers this week with 6.0 points, passing last week’s leader, Logan Gilbert of the Mariners, who falls to fourth with 5.0 points.

Pitchers earned Player of the Game honors in 64 of the 92 games this week (69.6 percent) while batters won in 28 games (30.4 percent). Pitchers increased their share of Player of the Game honors won overall from 66.7 percent last week to 67.2 percent this week (318 times in 473 total games). Batters have won 155 times in 473 games (32.8 percent).
Batters have won 190.6 of the total 566.2 Box-Toppers points awarded this season. Their share of point decreased from last week (34.2 percent) to this week (33.7 percent). (Pitchers have 375.6 points or 66.3 percent.) The all-time low share for batters in a single season is 38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.) While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
