About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Yankees pitcher Luis Gil continues his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings, topping the list for the fifth straight week.
Meanwhile, there are two new category leaders this week: Shota Imanaga of the Cubs rises to lead National League pitchers and Francisco Lindor of the Mets rises to lead NL batters. Meanwhile, Aaron Judge of the Yankees continues to lead AL batters and Gil continues his lead among AL pitchers.
Gil leads
Gil has 13.4 Box-Toppers points to lead all players, picking up no points in the past week. Despite earning his last Player of the Game honor more than two weeks ago (June 4) he leads season player rankings by 2.7 points, meaning any starting pitcher trailing him would need at least two starts to have a chance to pass him.
Gil leads over second-place player, Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga (10.7 points). He leads second-place AL pitcher Tanner Bibee of the Guardians (10.0), who is third overall.
National League pitchers
Shota Imanaga of the Cubs rises to lead NL pitchers this week with 10.7 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Zack Wheeler of the Phillies, who falls to second place (9.7 points).
Imanaga ranks second overall.
National League batters
Francisco Lindor of the Mets rises to lead NL batters this week with 6.4 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader Brenton Doyle of the Rockies, who falls to second place (5.2).
Lindor ranks 33rd overall.
American League batters
Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters for the second straight week with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He is ahead of second-place Juan Soto of the Yankees (7.0 points).
Judge ranks 17th among all players.
Box-Toppers almanac
While pitchers still won most of this week’s Player of the Game honors, batters continue to gain in their overall share of Player of the Game honors won for the season.
Pitchers won Player of the Game honors in 53 of the 93 games played (57.0 percent), while batters won in 40 (43.0 percent). However, batters’ overall share of Player of the Game honors won increased from 33.6 percent last week to 34.4 percent this week (386 times in 1,123 total games). Pitchers have won 737 times or 65.6 percent.
Batters also made overall gains in share of Box-Toppers points won but are still on pace to have their lowest share of points in the 30 seasons of Box-Toppers tracking.
Batters have won 35.0 percent of all points (467.9 out of 1,337.5), while pitchers have won 65.0 percent (869.6 points). Batters increased their overall share from 34.2 percent last week.
The all-time low share of points for batters in a single season is 38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.) While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009 and is on track to plummet to a record-shattering low in 2024.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
