About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Padres pitcher Dylan Cease rises to lead Box-Toppers season player rankings this week, passing Yankees pitcher Luis Gil, who had led for the eight previous weeks.
Meanwhile, all other player rankings category leaders remain the same: Cease continues to lead National League pitchers, Gil continues to lead American League pitchers, Brenton Doyle of the Rockies continues to lead NL batters and Aaron Judge of the Yankees continues to lead AL batters.
Cease leads
Cease has 16.4 Box-Toppers points to lead all players, earning overall Player of the Day honors twice in the past week, on Saturday and Thursday, earning 2.0 Box-Toppers points each time. He pitched a no-hitter Thursday in the 3-0 win over the Nationals. He took the lead with his Player of the Day honor Saturday, passing Gil (14.4), who had led for eight straight weeks. Cease increased his lead with his Player of the Day honor on Thursday.
Cease leads NL pitchers for the second week, ahead of second-place Zack Wheeler of the Phillies (13.7).
American League pitchers
Luis Gil of the Yankees leads AL pitchers for the ninth straight week with 14.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads ahead of second-place AL pitcher Tarik Skubal of the Tigers (13.4).
Gil falls from first to second place overall.
National League batters
Brenton Doyle of the Rockies leads NL batters for the third week with 8.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads ahead of second-place Francisco Lindor of the Mets (8.4).
Doyle ranks 29th among all players.
American League batters
Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters for the sixth straight week with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He is ahead of second-place Juan Soto of the Yankees (8.5 points).
Though Judge and Soto both have 8.5 points for the season, Judge ranks ahead because he has more 2023 points—12.0 vs. 9.0.
Judge ranks 30th among all players.
Box-Toppers almanac
Pitchers had a dominant week coming out of the All-Star break, winning nearly 70 percent of Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors (69.1 percent—65 out of 94 total games), while batters won just 29 times (30.9 percent).
Batters share of Player of the Game honors won for the season fell from 36.7 percent last week to 36.4 percent this week (561 times in 1,543 total games). Pitchers have won 63.6 percent of all Player of the Game honors this season (982 times in 1,543 games).
Batters’ share of Box-Toppers points won also slipped this week after having made a steady climb over the previous six weeks. Batters have won 36.6 percent of all points this season (672.5 out of 1,837.0), while pitchers have won 63.4 percent (1,164.5). Batters share of points earned slipped from 37.0 percent last week.
Over the previous six weeks, batters had gained 4.2 percent in their share of points from 32.8 percent seven weeks ago to 37.0 percent last week.
Batters are now further behind the all-time low share of points for batters in a single season—38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.)
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
