About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Padres pitcher Dylan Cease leads Box-Toppers season player rankings for the second week.
Meanwhile, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal rises to lead American League pitchers. Other player ranking category leaders remain the same: Cease leads National League pitchers, Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters and Brenton Doyle of the Rockies leads NL batters.
Cease leads
Cease has 17.4 Box-Toppers points to lead all players, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. He leads ahead of second-place player, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal (14.4). He leads NL pitchers for the third week ahead of second-place Zack Wheeler of the Phillies (13.7).
American League pitchers
Tarik Skubal of the Tigers rises to lead AL pitchers, passing Luis Gil of the Yankees, who led for the previous nine weeks.
Skubal has 14.4 Box-Toppers points, passing Gil (14.4), who falls to second place. (Though Skubal and Gil both have 14.4 Box-Toppers points in 2024, Skubal ranks ahead because he had more 2023 points—10.7 vs. 0.0.)
Skubal ranks second overall.
American League batters
Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters for the seventh straight week with 10.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.5 points in the past week. He is ahead of second-place Juan Soto of the Yankees (9.5 points).
Judge ranks 14th among all players.
National League batters

Box-Toppers almanac
Batters rebounded this week, winning exactly half of all Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors (a week after pitchers won nearly 70 percent). Batters won Player of the Game honors in 46 of the 92 games, while pitchers also won in 46 games.
Batters’ share of Player of the Game honors won for the season increased from 36.4 percent last week to 37.1 percent this week (607 times in 1,635 games). Pitchers have won 62.9 percent of all Player of the Game honors (1,028 in 1,635 games).
Batters’ overall share of Box-Toppers points won for the season also increased this week from 36.6 percent last week to 37.3 percent this week. Batters have now won 726.4 of the 1,946.4 points awarded this season, while pitchers have won 1,220.0 (62.7 percent).
The all-time low share of points for batters in a season is 38.1 percent in 2022 and batters are still behind that mark, but at 37.3 percent, they are at a high point for the season, are generally trending upward and are now within 1.0 percent of that all-time low with eight weeks left in the season. (Batters had 40.7 percent of all points in 2023.)
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
