Box-Toppers almanac
Batters’ quest to avoid setting a record-low share of Box-Toppers points earned in a season took a step backward this week.
Pitchers won Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in 70.2 percent of all games this week (66 times in 94 games) while batters won 29.8 percent (28 times). Pitchers increased their share of Player of the Game honors for the season from 62.7 percent last week to 63.0 percent this week (1,207 times in 1,915 total games). Batters have now won 37.0 percent of all games (708 of 1,915).
Batters’ share of total Box-Toppers points for the season also decreased from 37.5 percent last week to 37.2 percent this week. Batters have earned 846.8 of the total 2,279.1 points awarded, while pitchers have won 1,432.3 (62.8 percent).
The all-time low share of points for batters in a season is 38.1 percent in 2022 and batters fell further behind that mark this week with only five weeks left in the season. (Batters had 40.7 percent of all points in 2023.)
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
