Box-Toppers almanac
With four weeks left in the season, it is beginning to look likely that batters will break the record for the lowest share of Box-Toppers points earned in a season compared to pitchers.
Batters made up a tiny bit of ground this week but based on their performance in recent weeks, it appears they will finish below the record-low 38.1 percent share of Box-Toppers points won by batters in 2022.
Pitchers won Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in 61.2 percent of all games this week (60 times in 98 games) while batters won 38.8 percent (38 times). Batters increased their share of Player of the Game honors for the season from 37.0 percent last week to 37.1 percent this week (746 times in 2,013 total games). Pitchers have now won 62.9 percent of all games (1,267 of 2,013).
Batters’ share of total Box-Toppers points for the season increased marginally from 37.16 percent last week to 37.21 percent this week. Batters have earned 891.0 of the total 2,394.5 points awarded, while pitchers have won 1,503.5 (62.8 percent).
Box-Toppers estimates that batters would need to win more than 42 percent of the season’s remaining Box-Toppers points to avoid breaking the all-time record low share of points (38.1 percent in 2022). Batters have not won more than 40 percent of all Player of the Game honors in the past five weeks. (Batters had 40.7 percent of all points in 2023.)
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
