The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets were making up two rained-out games in a doubleheader Monday, a day after the regular season was scheduled to end. They were the day’s only games with playoff implications for both teams and for the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the end, the Braves secured the second Wild Card spot, becoming the fifth-seeded NL playoff team and the Mets secured the third Wild Card spot, becoming the sixth-seeded NL playoff team. The Diamondbacks were eliminated from postseason contention.

Player of the Day

Holmes struck out seven over four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk, in the 3-0 win over the Mets in the second game of the doubleheader, securing the playoff spot for the Braves. Holmes did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because he did not pitch the required five innings to earn the win.

Holmes earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and ranks 304th among all players, 139th among NL pitchers.

This was Holmes’ Box-Toppers debut, his first career Player of the Game honor. Holmes made his Major League debut June 16 and was playing in his 26th career game.

Francisco Lindor of the Mets is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Game 1 of Monday’s doubleheader win over the Braves.

National League Batter of the Day

Francisco Lindor of the Mets hit a ninth-inning, two-run, go-ahead home run, in the 8-7 win over the Braves, in a game that secured a playoff spot for the Mets. Lindor went 2-for-5, scoring twice and driving in three runs.

Lindor earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 10.9 for the season, 45th among all players and rising to second among NL batters, trailing only Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers (11.0).

Lindor becomes the 59th player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2024 and the sixth batter. It is his first season with 10 or more points. His previous high was 9.6 points in 2018 with Cleveland, third among American League batters.

AL Player and Batter of the Day

There is no AL Player of the Day and no AL Batter of the Day for Monday because no AL players were active in the doubleheader between two NL teams.

Scoring

  • Holmes earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Lindor earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
