American League Player of the Day

Brent Rooker of the Athletics homered, hit a sacrifice fly and went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 8-3 win over the Guardians.

Rooker earned 6.5 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 13th among AL batters.

National League Batter of the Day

Tyler Black of the Brewers hit a three-run homer and went 1-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 6-4 win over the White Sox.

Black, 24, played in 18 games with the Brewers in 2024, but did not earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in any of them and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points. His rookie status is still intact for 2025.

American League Batter of the Day

There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Wednesday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Brent Rooker.

Notable

While Schwellenbach won his third Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of spring Wednesday, there are four others who won the honor for the second time during 2025 spring training:

  • Mets pitcher David Peterson (5IP 2H 0R 3BB 4K W in the 8-2 win over the Astros) was also Player of the Game March 8 in the 7-3 win over the Marlins (4IP H 0R 2BB 2K W).

  • Jo Adell of the Angels (HR 2B 3-4 2R 2BI in the 6-3 win over the Guardians) was also Player of the Game March 8 in the 6-2 win over the Brewers (HR 1-3 R 3BI).

  • Ceddanne Rafaela of the Red Sox (2-3 R 2BI in the 6-4 win over the Tigers) was also Player of the Game March 1 in the 8-4 win over the Twins (2B 3-3 R 3BI).

  • Willson Contreras of the Cardinals (2-2 R BI in the 7-1 win over the Nationals) was also Player of the Game March 1 in the 3-2 win over the Nationals (HR 1-3 R 2BI).

Wednesday’s games

There were 12 completed spring training games between two Major League teams Wednesday. In the 12 games, there were nine Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games. In three of Wednesday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day:

  • Scwhellenbach would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Rooker would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.

  • Black would have earned 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day.

  • All of Wednesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
