* Craig Kimbrel ranks third among players listed as closing pitchers, but the top two listed players—Francisco Liriano (82.1) and Ian Kennedy (79.5)—have only recently served as closers and spent the bulk of their careers as starters. Kimbrel is the highest-ranking player who has served most of his career primarily as a closer.
Clayton Kershaw and Albert Pujols lead Box-Toppers All-Decade All-Star team for the 2010s.
Kershaw earned the most Box-Toppers points of any player from 2010-2019 (210.1) and Pujols earned the most of any batter over that span (79.9), which is 25th among all players.
The All-Decade All-Star team is made up of players who led their position in Box-Toppers points over the span of 2010-2019.
The decade’s points leader Kershaw ranks third among players in career points since 1995 when Box-Toppers tracking began (227.5). All but 17.4 of his career points were earned from 2010-2019. He had seven straight seasons earning 20 or more points (from 2011 to 2017) and led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2011 (26.1), 2013 (21.7) and 2014 (31.5).
Pujols led all batters in 2010s Box-Toppers points (79.9). He also led all batters in the decade of the 2000s, earning 121.9 Box-Toppers points from 2000 to 2009. Pujols and all collective batters had a better decade in the 2000s than the 2010s, a period in which batters earned a larger share of Box-Toppers points compared to pitchers. Pujols’s 79.9 points earned in the 2010s would rank 16th among batters in the 2000s. (I pledge to write a more complete post on the startling drop in Box-Toppers points among batters from the 2000s to the 2010s.)

Pujols leads all batters in career Box-Toppers points since 1995 (201.8) and ranks seventh overall in career points since 1995. Pujols led National League batters in 2010 with the Cardinals (15.4) and ranked second among NL batters in 2011 (12.5). He was outside his league’s top 10 batters from 2012-2018 (he moved to the American League’s Angels in 2012), but ranked third among AL batters in 2019 with the Angels (11.0). He led NL batters four other times from 2003 to 2009.
In a chart elsewhere on this page, we show the Box-Toppers 2010s All-Decade All-Star team with the player who had the most Box-Toppers points over 2010-2019 by position, including the three top outfielders, the four top starting pitchers and the top closing pitcher. Also, there is a chart showing the top 100 overall players in Box-Toppers points for the 2010s and another chart showing the top 50 batters in Box-Toppers points from 2010 to 2019. Both charts are sortable, so by clicking or tapping the Position column header, you are able to see the top several players at each position.
Starting pitchers
Kershaw leads all starting pitchers in the 2010s, ahead of:
Max Scherzer, who earned 190.2 of his 197.2 career points in the 2010s. He ranks second in points over the 2010s and eighth in career points since 1995.
Justin Verlander, who earned 164.4 of his 205.6 career points in the 2010s. He ranks third in points over the 2010s and fifth in career points since 1995.
Zack Greinke, who earned 155.5 of his 207.1 career points in the 2010s. He ranks fourth in points over the 2010s and fourth in career points since 1995.
Closing pitcher
Craig Kimbrel earned 75.4 Box-Toppers points in the 2010s, most among players who served most of his career primarily as a closer. He actually ranks third among players listed as closing pitchers, but the other two—Francisco Liriano (82.1) and Ian Kennedy (79.5)—have only recently served as closers and spent the bulk of their careers as starters. Kimbrel ranks 29th among all players in the 2010s. He’s earned all his 75.4 career points in the 2010s and ranks 162nd in career points since 1995, fifth among all players who have primarily served as closers.
First base/designated hitter
Pujols could be placed on the All-Decade All-Star team either as first basemen or designated hitter, serving at both position during the decade. Likewise, Miguel Cabrera, who we’ve placed at the designated hitter spot on the All-Star team, could be flipped with Pujols and placed at first base, the position he played most of the decade.
Cabrera ranks second among batters over the decade with 78.8 Box-Toppers points, just 1.1 behind Pujols. He ranks 28th among all players in the decade. Most of his points this decade (72.8 of his 78.8) came from 2010 to 2016, including his 16.9 points in 2013 with the Tigers, the most single-season points by a batter during the decade.
Cabrera’s 150.9 career Box-Toppers points ranks 24th among all players since 1995, fifth among all batters over the span. Cabrera’s 78.8 points in the 2010s is slightly more than the 72.1 he earned in the 2000s. However, his 72.1 points from 2000 to 2009 ranked 20th among batters over the span (that total would have ranked third among batters in the 2010s).
Second base
Robinson Cano’s 59.5 Box-Toppers points in the 2010s ranks first among all second basemen, 12th among all batters and 62nd among all players. His 85.4 career Box-Toppers points ranks second among all second basemen since 1995, behind Jeff Kent (109.7).
Shortstop
Troy Tulowitzki’s 46.8 Box-Toppers points in the 2010s ranks first among all shortstops, 33rd among all batters and 125th among all players. His 59.8 career Box-Toppers points ranks sixth among all shorstops since 1995.
Third base
Adrian Beltre’s 57.1 Box-Toppers points in the 2010s ranks first among all third basemen, 16th among all batters and 69th among all players. He ranks just ahead of Josh Donaldson (55.1 points). His 116.8 career Box-Toppers points ranks third among third basemen since 1995, behind Alex Rodriguez (187.0) and Chipper Jones (149.0).
Beltre’s 55.2 points from 2000 to 2009 ranked 44th among all batters and sixth among all third basemen during that decade.
Catcher
Buster Posey’s 49.0 Box-Toppers points in the 2010s ranks first among all catchers, 24th among all batters and 108th among all players. He ranks just ahead of catchers Joe Mauer (45.5), Mike Napoli (44.7) and Brian McCann (43.9). All his 49.0 career points were earned in the 2010s and he ranks 10th among catchers in career points since 1995.
Outfield
The three top outfielders in Box-Toppers points for the 2010s are Ryan Braun (72.0), Mike Trout (70.7) and Carlos Gonzalez (68.2).

Top 100 players
Of the top 100 players in Box-Toppers points for the 2010s, only 21 are batters. The highest-ranked batter is Pujols at 25th place.
By comparison, in the decade of the 2000s, 48 of the top 100 players were batters and the highest-ranked batter, again Pujols, ranked fifth overall.
Pitchers occupy the top 24 positions among the top 100 players for the 2010s and 13 of them earned more than 100 Box-Toppers points during the decade, 2010 to 2019.

But of course, this is just the end of the 2010s and not the actual end of the decade. Date sticklers will remind you that a decade starts with the year ending in “one” and not “zero.” That means the actual decade runs from 2011 to 2020, meaning we may be back again after next season to examine the All-Star team and the top players of the 21st century’s second decade.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
