Verlander earned 51.6 Box-Toppers points combined in 2018 and 2019 to lead all players in that span while Scherzer earned 134.3 points from 2014-2019, most in that span.
Scherzer ranks third among players in the past two seasons with 40.5 points, behind second-place player, Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole (50.2). Verlander ranks eighth among players in the past six seasons with 91.4 points.
(See the chart below for Top 100 players of 2018-19 and 2014-19.)
This is the second straight season Scherzer has led players over the six-year rolling total. At the end of 2018, he led all players from 2013-18 with 137.0 points.
Scherzer had been among the overall top 10 players for six straight seasons from 2013-2018, but fell to 15th in 2019 with 15.4 points. Here’s a look at Scherzer’s Box-Toppers point total and rank each of the past six seasons:
2014—22.1 points with Tigers, fifth overall, second among American League pitchers.
2015—21.0 with Nationals, sixth overall, fourth among National League pitchers.
2016—25.7 with Nationals, first overall.
2017—25.0 with Nationals, second overall, first among NL pitchers.
2018—25.1 with Nationals, second overall, first among NL pitchers.
2019—15.4 with Nationals, 15th overall, ninth among NL pitchers.
With Scherzer ending his streak of six straight seasons among the overall top 10, the longest current streak of top 10 finishes is now two seasons by two Astros teammates—Verlander and Cole:
Verlander, the leader in points over 2018 and 2019, ranked third in 2018 with 24.1 points and second in 2019 with 27.5. Cole ranked eighth in 2018 with 18.0 and first in 2019 with 32.2.
Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw ranks second among players over the past six seasons with 125.4 points from 2014-2019, which includes ranking among the top three overall players for four straight seasons from 2014 to 2017 (first in 2014 with 31.5, second in 2015 with 25.7, second in 2016 with 24.4 and third in 2017 with 23.1). In 2018, he had 8.0 points (73rd overall) and in 2019, he had 12.7 points (25th overall).
Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale has the most Box-Toppers points among AL players over the past six seasons with 105.8, third overall. Sale led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2017 with 25.1 points and ranked among the top 10 overall four times (2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018).
There are just four players with more than 100 Box-Toppers points over the past six seasons. In addition to the three already mentioned—Scherzer (134.3), Kershaw (125.4) and Sale (105.8)—Indians pitcher Corey Kluber has 104.1 points from 2014 to 2019, fourth among all players. Kluber also ranked fourth overall in points over the past six seasons last year (2013-18) and his steady spot in the rankings is all the more remarkable because he earned no Box-Toppers points in 2019 as he was out much of the season with injuries. Kluber earned 21.7 points in 2018 and those points alone were enough to rank him 31st among players over the past two seasons (2018-19).
Christian Yelich of the Brewers is the top-ranked batter over the past two seasons with 23.2 Box-Toppers points over 2018-19, 23rd among all players. Yelich led NL batters in 2018 with 11.5 points and ranked second among NL batters in 2019 with 11.7. Yelich has 43.7 points over the past six seasons (2014-19), ranking 52nd among all players, sixth among all batters.
Mike Trout of the Angels is the top-ranked batter over the past six seasons with 54.7 Box-Toppers points from 2014 to 2019, 26th among all players. Trout has 16.7 points over the past two seasons (2018-19), 57th among all players and fifth among all batters. Trout has never led AL batters in Box-Toppers points in any season but has been ranked among the top 10 AL batters in five of the past six seasons:
2014—8.5, seventh.
2015-12.0, second.
2016—12.5, second.
2017—5.0, 45th.
2018—8.0, fifth.
2018—8.7, ninth.
Jose Fernandez, who died in a boating accident near the end of the 2016 season, still ranks 87th among all players over the past six seasons, with 34.1 points earned from 2014 through 2016. Despite having no points for the past three seasons, the late Marlins pitcher still has more points since 2014 than all but 86 other players.

The Red Sox and Cubs have the most players among the top 100 for 2014-2019 with seven. The Yankees have the next most with six. Three teams each have five players on the list—Mets, Astros and Phillies. There are two teams with no players among the top 100 over the past six seasons—Orioles and Marlins. However, Jose Fernandez, who was with the Marlins before he died in 2016, is on the list.
The list also includes two players listed as free agents (Scott Kazmir, ranked 79th, who last earned Box-Toppers points in 2016 and Bartolo Colon, ranked 95th, who last earned points in 2018) and two listed as retired (John Lackey, ranked 61st, who last played in 2017 and Jason Hammel, ranked 75th, who last played in 2018).
There are 50 players who make all three top 100 lists——for the 2019 season (see post about that list here), for 2018-19 and for 2014-19 (see the chart Players on 3 top 100 lists).
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
