About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Nola earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 6.7 for the season, rising to third place in season player rankings, second among National League pitchers, behind Yu Darvish of the Cubs (6.7). Though both Darvish and Nola have 6.7 Box-Toppers points, Darvish ranks ahead because he had more 2019 Box-Toppers points (10.4 vs. 9.7).

American League Player of the Day—Indians pitcher Zach Plesac struck out six over six innings, allowing one run, four hits and no walks, in the 10-1 win over the Royals.

National League Batter of the Day—Alex Dickerson of the Giants hit three home runs (including a three-run shot) and two doubles in the 23-5 win over the Rockies. Dickerson went 5-for-6, scoring five times and driving in six runs.

Dickerson had a Box-Toppers game score Tuesday of +10.0, the highest-ranking game score for a batter earning Player of the Game honors so far in 2020. On July 26, Nelson Cruz of the Twins won Box-Toppers overall Player of the Day honors with a game score of +10.0 (2HR 2B 4-5 4R 7BI in the 14-2 win over the White Sox), but Dickerson’s +10.0 score ranks higher because he had more at bats (six vs. five).

American League Batter of the Day—Victor Reyes of the Tigers homered, doubled and went 4-for-6, scoring twice and driving in five runs, in the 12-1 win over the Brewers.

Notable—Marcell Ozuna of the Braves earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors hitting three home runs in the 10-3 win over the Red Sox (3-5 2R 6BI). But his Box-Toppers game score of +7.0 was just the third-best by an NL batter earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Normally a day in which he could expect to win at least NL Batter of the Day (worth 1.5 Box-Toppers points) or even overall Player of the Day (worth 2.0 points), Ozuna earns just 1.0 point. He had a lower Box-Toppers game score than NL Batter of the Day Dickerson (+10.0) and Player of the Game winner Brad Miller of the Cardinals (+8.0—2HR 2B 4-6 3R 7BI in the 16-2 win over the Reds).

Debut—Scott Heineman of the Rangers made his Box-Toppers debut Tuesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Heineman (0-0 R 0BI in the 6-5, 10-inning win over the Astros) was a ninth-inning replacement and was, under pandemic rules, the extra-inning runner placed at second to start the 10th inning. He had no plate appearances (and was not deemed a pinch runner since he had played the field) but did score the winning run in the top of the 10th inning and had the highest Box-Toppers game score (+1.0) among Rangers players Tuesday.

Heineman made his Major League debut Aug. 2, 2019 and was playing in his 47th career game.

Scoring—Nola earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Plesac earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Dickerson and Reyes each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
