About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Bieber finishes the pandemic-shortened 2020 season with 11.4 Box-Toppers points, leading Box-Toppers player rankings report for the sixth straight week.
Meanwhile, Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer rises to lead National League pitchers, Marcell Ozuna of the Braves rises to lead NL batters and Luke Voit of the Yankees maintains his lead among American League batters.
Bieber has 11.4 Box-Toppers points through the final regular season games of Sept. 27, gaining 1.7 Box-Toppers points since the last player rankings report on Sept. 17. Bieber also leads AL pitchers, ahead of Lance Lynn of the Rangers (9.1 points).
Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer rises to regain the 2020 Box-Toppers points lead among NL pitchers with 10.0 Box-Toppers points, passing Jacob deGrom of the Mets (8.7 points), who led Sept. 17, but falls to fourth among NL pitchers in the final rankings. Bauer led NL pitchers in ranking reports on Aug. 20 and Aug. 27.
Marcell Ozuna of the Braves rises to lead NL batters with 4.5 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader teammate Adam Duvall (4.0 points), who falls to fourth among NL batters. Two other NL batters also have 4.5 Box-Toppers points, but Ozuna ranks ahead of them because he has more 2019 points—Ozuna (12.0), Asdrubal Cabrera of the Nationals (9.0) and Trent Grisham of the Padres (2.5). Ozuna ranks 38th among all players in 2020 Box-Toppers points.
Ozuna was also Box-Toppers points leader among NL batters in 2019 when he was with the Cardinals (12.0), making him the 17th player—and eighth batter—to lead a Box-Toppers points category in more than one season (player tracking began in 1995).
Luke Voit of the Yankees is first in Box-Toppers points lead among AL batters with 6.0. He also led Sept. 17. Voit leads second-place AL batter Eloy Jimenez of the White Sox (5.5). Voit ranks 22nd among all players in 2020 Box-Toppers points.
In 2020, 497 different players earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. There are 129 players who have more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points. There are 96 players who made their Box-Toppers debut this season—19 since Sept. 17—the first time in their career they earned Player of the Game honors. There were 898 games completed in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season in which 900 were scheduled. Remarkably, despite the pandemic, only two games were missed. Every team but the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals played the full 60-game schedule. Both of those teams played 58 games each.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
