Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Kershaw struck out 13 over seven perfect innings—allowing no hits, runs, walks or baserunners of any kind—in the 7-0 win over the Twins. However, he was pulled after seven innings and 80 pitches in his first start of the season. Reliever Alex Vesia gave up the only hit to the Twins in the eighth inning.

Kershaw earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season and rises to fourth place in season player rankings. Kershaw now has 250.6 career Box-Toppers points, second-most since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began, behind only Randy Johnson (282.5). (It should be noted Johnson would have more Box-Toppers points if his entire career from 1988 were tracked, projections put his point total at about 385.)
Kershaw leads active players in career points ahead of Mets pitcher Max Scherzer (226.3). Scherzer also pitched Wednesday in a Mets win but did not earn Player of the Game honors.
Kershaw has now earned Box-Toppers points in 15 straight seasons, tied for the fourth-longest currently active streak (see chart on this page Active season streaks). He’s one of seven players with an active such streak of 15 seasons or more.
Kershaw earned his first Box-Toppers points in 2008 with the Dodgers. His best season was 2014 with the Dodgers when he had 31.5 Box-Toppers points, first among all players. He has led all players in Box-Toppers points in a season three times (2011, 2013 and 2014) and finished among the top three in points in each season from 2011 to 2017. He earned 20 or more points for those seven straight seasons, the longest such streak since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
In 2021, he earned 13.4 Box-Toppers points, 19th overall and 12th among NL pitchers.
Kershaw had a Box-Toppers game score Wednesday of +20.0, highest for any Player of the Game winner so far in 2022. There were only three Player of the Game winners with a higher Box-Toppers game score in 2021:
+22.0 on April 23 by Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom (CG 2H 0R 0BB 15K W in the 6-0 win over the Nationals).
+21.0 on May 5 by Orioles pitcher John Means (CG 0H 0R 0BB 12K W in the 6-0 win over the Mariners).
+21.0 on Sept. 11 by Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes (8IP 0H 0R BB 14K W in the 3-0 win over the Indians).
American League Player of the Day—Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays hit three home runs and went 4-for-4, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 6-4 win over the Yankees.
Guerrero earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, his first points of the season. He had 3.7 points in 2021, 59th among AL batters.

In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
