Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, rising to fourth in season player rankings.
Also Sunday, two other players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 after earning Player of the Game honors—Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes rises to seventh place and Twins pitcher Joe Ryan rises to eighth.
Player of the Day—Skubal struck out 11 over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks, in the 5-1 win over the Orioles.
Skubal earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.7 for the season, fourth among all players and second among American League pitchers, behind overall leader Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (8.0).
It should be noted that Ohtani has earned 4.0 of his 2022 Box-Toppers points as a pitcher and 4.0 as a designated hitter. So Skubal is currently Box-Toppers top-ranked AL player who serves only as a pitcher.
National League Player of the Day—Brewers pitcher Aaron Ashby struck out eight over four scoreless and hitless innings to close the game and earn the save, in the 7-3 win over the Marlins.
Ashby earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 2.7 for the season, 24th among NL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day—Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals homered, hit two doubles and went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 15-6 win over the Giants.
American League Batter of the Day—Adolis Garcia of the Rangers hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, in the 7-1 win over the Red Sox. Garcia went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in five runs.
Rankings—Two other players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday:
Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes (8IP 3H R 0BB 7K W in the 5-1 win over the White Sox) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 5.7 for the season, rising to seventh place overall, third among AL pitchers, behind Ohtani (8.0) and Skubal (5.7).
Twins pitcher Joe Ryan (6IP 4H R 0BB 5K W in the 3-1 win over the Guardians) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 5.7 for the season, rising to eighth place overall, fourth among AL pitchers.
Three AL pitchers in the overall top 10 reached the same 5.7 point total Sunday. Their rankings on based on their 2021 Box-Toppers point total—Skubal (8.7) ranks highest, followed by Cortes (5.0) and Ryan (2.7).
Notable—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander now has 211.6 career Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.

Also notable—Two Cincinnati Reds pitchers allowed no hits Sunday, but lost a 1-0 game to the Pirates.
Reds’ starting pitcher Hunter Greene (7.1IP 0H R ER 5BB 9K L) had a Box-Toppers game score of +9.1 and would have been Player of the Game if the Reds won. Greene has 0.0 Box-Toppers points and has yet to make his Box-Toppers debut by earning his first career Player of the Game honor.
