Reds pitcher Tyler Mahle is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Tuesday, Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole rises to ninth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning American League Player of the Day honors.
Player of the Day—Mahle struck out 12 over nine scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 5-3, 12-inning win over the Diamondbacks. Mahle did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.
Mahle earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, 38th among all players and 17th among National League pitchers.
American League Player of the Day—Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole struck out seven over six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and one walk, in the 2-0 win over the Rays.
Cole earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 8.4 for the season, ninth among all players and fifth among AL pitchers.
Cole also now has 131.3 career Box-Toppers points, 37th among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails 36th-ranked player Jason Giambi (133.4). He ranks 12th among active players in career points, fourth among active AL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day—Travis d'Arnaud of the Braves hit a three-run homer and went 3-for-5, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 10-4 win over the Nationals.
American League Batter of the Day—Jose Ramirez of the Guardians doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 4-3, 10-inning win over the Rockies.
Ramirez earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 7.2 for the season, second among AL batters, behind Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (9.0). (Ohtani has earned 5.0 of his points as a starting pitcher and 4.0 as a designated hitter.)
Notable—Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas earned Player of the Game honors Tuesday, coming within one out of a no-hitter in the 9-1 win over the Pirates.
Mikolas (8.2IP H R 0ER BB 6K W) gave up a double with two out in the ninth inning to lose the no-hit bid. He still earned Player of the Game honors but had only the second-highest Box-Toppers game score among Tuesday’s Player of the Game winners. Mikolas had a game score of +11.2, less than the +18.0 score by overall Player of the Day Mahle. That meant Mikolas earned just 1.0 Box-Toppers point while Mahle earned 2.0.

That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
