White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Tuesday, three players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after each earned Player of the Game honors—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander rises to second place, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal rises to fourth place and Braves pitcher Kyle Wright rises to sixth place.
Player of the Day—Kopech struck out eight over six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk, in the 4-0 win over the Dodgers.
Kopech earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 6.0 for the season, 19th among all players and 11th among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Padres pitcher Yu Darvish struck out six over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 7-0 win over the Mets.
Darvish earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.4 for the season, ninth among NL pitchers.
Darvish also now has 112.6 career Box-Toppers points, 63rd among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails 62nd-ranked players Kevin Brown (112.8) on the “all-time” list. Darvish ranks 16th among active, signed players in career points and eighth among active NL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day—Nick Fortes of the Marlins hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-2, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 12-2 win over the Nationals.
American League Batter of the Day—Marcus Semien of the Rangers hit two home runs and went 4-for-4, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 6-3 win over the Guardians.
Rankings—Three players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after each earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point winning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.
Astros pitcher Justin Verlander (7IP 6H R 2BB 12K W in the 4-1 win over the Mariners) rises from sixth to second place with 9.0 Box-Toppers points, trailing only overall leader Pete Alonso of the Mets (9.2). Verlander rises to first place among AL pitchers, passing previous leader Shane McClanahan of the Rays (8.7).
Verlander now has 215.6 career Box-Toppers points, sixth among all players since 1995, when player tracking began. He trails fifth-place player, Royals pitcher Zack Greinke (217.8) by 2.2 points. Verlander ranks fourth among active players in career points, second among active AL pitchers, behind Greinke.
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal (7IP 6H 3R 0BB 9K W in the 5-3 win over the Pirates) rises from eighth to fourth place with 8.7 Box-Toppers points, second among AL pitchers, behind Verlander (9.0).
Braves pitcher Kyle Wright (8IP 5H 2R 0BB 7K W in the 3-2 win over the Athletics) rises from ninth to sixth place with 8.7 Box-Toppers points, second among NL pitchers, behind Joe Musgrove of the Padres (8.7). Though both have 8.7 points on the season, Musgrove ranks ahead because he has more 2021 Box-Toppers points—16.1 vs. 0.0.
Debut—Matt Vierling of the Phillies made his Box-Toppers debut Tuesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Vierling (HR 1-1 R BI in the 3-2 win over the Brewers) made his Major League debut June 19, 2021, and was playing in his 58th career game.
