Kevin Smith of the Athletics is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Friday’s spring training games.

Smith hit a walk-off grand slam, doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in five runs, in the 12-11 win over the Rangers.

Smith would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Smith made his Major League debut Aug. 18, 2021, and has played in 65 games over the past two seasons, but has yet to earn his first regular season Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Mike Brosseau of the Brewers is Box-Toppers NL Player of the Day in Friday’s spring training games.

National League Player of the Day—Mike Brosseau of the Brewers homered, hit two doubles and went 3-for-3, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 12-3 win over the Guardians.

Brosseau would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Brosseau earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points in 2022.

Brosseau had a Box-Toppers game score Friday of +5.0, the same as another NL batter who won Player of the Game honors, Darick Hall of the Phillies (2HR 3-3 2R 3BI in the 10-4 win over the Pirates). But Brosseau beat Hall for NL Player of the Day honors because he had more runs batted in—four vs. three.

AL and NL Batters of the Day—There are no separate AL and NL Batters of the Day for Friday because the overall Player of the Day is AL batter Kevin Smith and the NL Player of the Day is batter Mike Brosseau.

Mets pitcher Justin Verlander is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s spring training win over the Astros.

Notable—Mets pitcher Justin Verlander has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among Friday’s spring training Box-Toppers Player of the Game winners.

Verlander (3.1IP 3H R 0BB 5K W in the 7-2 win over the Astros) led all players in 2022 with 26.0 Box-Toppers points when he was with the Astros. Verlander has earned 232.6 career Box-Toppers points, fifth among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began and third among active players.

Box-Toppers tracks spring training games between two Major League teams and does not track World Baseball Classic games or other games that involve non-Major League teams. In Friday’s 16 spring training games, one ended in a tie in which no Player of the Game honor was awarded (see chart below for game details). In the remaining 15, 11 who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining four players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.

Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Smith would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Brosseau would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
