Reds pitcher Nick Lodolo is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Monday’s spring training games.
Lodolo struck out eight over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks, in the 10-0 win over the Angels.
Lodolo would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Lodolo earned 7.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 41st among National League pitchers. This is his second Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of 2023 spring training. He also did it March 5.
American League Player of the Day—Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman struck out six over five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 5-0 win over the Tigers. Gausman did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.
Gausman would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.
Gausman earned 12.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 15th among AL pitchers. This is his third Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of 2023 spring training. He also did it March 9 and March 15.
National League Batter of the Day—Rhys Hoskins of the Phillies homered, doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 14-6 win over the Orioles.
Hoskins earned 6.5 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 12th among NL batters.
American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Monday because no AL batter earned Player of the Game honors in Monday’s 11 spring training games.
Notable—Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among Monday’s spring training Player of the Game winners.
Gilbert (4IP 3H 0R 0BB 5K W in the 7-2 win over the Brewers) earned 14.1 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 12th among AL pitchers.
Also notable—In addition to Lodolo and Gausman, two other Monday Box-Toppers Player of the Game winners won the honor previously during 2023 spring training:
Marcell Ozuna of the Braves (3-3 2R 0BI in the 6-5 win over the Rays) was also NL Batter of the Day March 14.
P.J. Higgins of the Diamondbacks (2B 2-2 0R 2BI in the 7-3 win over the White Sox) was also Player of the Game March 13.
Box-Toppers tracks spring training games between two Major League teams and does not track World Baseball Classic games or other games that involve non-Major League teams. In Monday’s 11 spring training games, one ended in a tie in which no Player of the Game honor was awarded (see chart below for game details). In the remaining 10, eight who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining two players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.
Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Lodolo would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Gausman would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Hoskins would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Monday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
