Ohtani also leads American League pitchers and batters. Also this week, Luis Arraez of the Marlins rises to lead National League batters in Box-Toppers rankings. Plus, Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks maintains his lead among NL pitchers.
Ohtani
Ohtani has 12.9 Box-Toppers points to maintain his lead among all players, earning no points in the past week. He leads over Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman (12.0), who is second among all players and among AL pitchers. Ohtani also leads AL batters for the sixth straight week, ahead of Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5 points).
Ohtani has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors 11 times in 2023—six as a designated hitter and five as a starting pitcher. He’s earned 7.2 of his Box-Toppers points as a batter and 5.7 as a starting pitcher. He is the only player to qualify to rank among both pitchers and batters in Box-Toppers rankings because he’s earned more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors in both categories.
In both 2021 and 2022, Ohtani spent periods of both seasons ranked among batters but finished both years ranked only as a starting pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.
National League batters
Luis Arraez of the Marlins rises to first place in the category with 5.5 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Max Muncy of the Dodgers (5.0), who falls to third place. Arraez leads over second-place NL batter Jake Fraley of the Reds (5.5). Though Arraez and Fraley both have 5.5 points, Arraez ranks ahead because he has more 2022 Box-Toppers points—5.5 vs. 3.2.
Arraez ranks 43rd overall.
National League pitchers
Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen leads the category for the 10th straight week with 9.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. He leads over second-place Braxton Garrett of the Marlins (9.7 points). Though Gallen and Garrett both have 9.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023, Gallen ranks ahead because he has more 2022 Box-Toppers points—18.7 vs. 5.7.
Gallen ranks third overall this week.
Box-Toppers almanac
Players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023—566 (there were 539 as of last week).
Players with more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points—198 (there were 178 as of last week).
Players who’ve made their Box-Toppers debut so far in 2023 (earning their first career Player of the Game honor)—100 (there were 89 as of last week).
Games completed so far in 2023—1,124, an average of 74.9 per team.
Percentage of scheduled season completed—46.3.
Pitchers had their most dominant week of the season, winning Player of the Game honors in 64 of the 92 games played (69.6 percent), while batters won in 28 games (30.4 percent). There were only two weeks in the record-setting, pitcher-dominant year of 2022 in which pitchers had better weeks—April 7-14 (69.4 percent) and May 27-June 2 (69.8 percent). Pitchers’ share of Player of the Game honors is now approaching 60 percent for the season (59.9 percent—673 of 1,124 games). Pitchers have exceeded 60 percent in only four seasons since 1995, all since they became increasingly dominant after 2009—in 2014 (60.86 percent), in 2018 (60.65 percent), in 2021 (60.85 percent) and in 2022 (61.89 percent). Some writers (well, me) expected rules changes this season would help batters and for a time, the evidence did seem to suggest they were benefitting. But now batters are doing only marginally better than at the same time last season. Through 12 weeks of the season in 2023, they’ve won 40.1 percent of all Player of the Game honors (451 of 1,124), while through 12 weeks in 2022, they won 39.2 percent of all Player of the Game honors (447 out of 1,141 games). Through the entire 2022 season, batters won a record-low 38 percent share of Player of the Game honors.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
