Elias Diaz of the Rockies is Box-Toppers 2023 All-Star Game Player of the Game.
Diaz hit an eighth-inning, two-run, go-ahead home run, in the National League’s 3-2 win Tuesday over the American League. Diaz went 1-for-2, scoring once and driving in two runs.
Diaz was also named the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player.
Diaz had a Box-Toppers game score of +2.0, same as one other NL teammate, Nationals pitcher Josiah Gray (1IP 0H 0R 0BB K ND). But in cases of game score ties, batters rank ahead of pitchers.
Diaz has earned 3.5 Box-Toppers points in 2023, 149th among all players, 27th among NL batters and third among NL catchers. He was selected as a reserve player on the NL team, behind elected NL catcher Sean Murphy of the Braves (4.0 Box-Toppers points, first among NL catchers).
Starting pitcher for the National League, Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks, had a +1.0 Box-Toppers game score (1IP H 0R 0BB K ND).
As it was a low-scoring game and because pitchers appeared for no more than one inning, Box-Toppers game scores were low. Only three NL batters had positive game scores:
Diaz, +2.0.
Luis Arraez of the Marlins, +1.0 (2-2 R 0BI).
J.D. Martinez of the Dodgers, +1.0 (2B 2-2 R 0BI).
American League starting pitcher Gerrit Cole had a +1.0 Box-Toppers game score (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 0K ND).
Shohei Ohtani of the Angels, who leads all players, all AL pitchers and all AL batters in Box-Toppers points (13.9) batted in the game, but did not pitch. He had a -1.0 Box-Toppers game score (0-1 0R 0BI).
Spencer Strider of the Braves leads NL players with 11.7 Box-Toppers points, but did not pitch Tuesday, though he was selected to the team.
Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves, who leads NL batters in 2023 Box-Toppers points (6.0), had a -2.0 Box-Toppers game score (0-2 0R 0BI).

Scoring
Just as All-Star Game statistics don’t count in a player’s regular season statistics, no Box-Toppers points are awarded for the All-Star Game.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
