Marlins pitcher Jesus Luzardo is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, rising to second place in season player rankings and taking the 2023 Box-Toppers points lead among National League pitchers.
Luzardo struck out 13 over seven innings, allowing one run, four hits and two walks, in the 3-2, 10-inning win over the Rockies. Luzardo did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Rockies tied the game after he exited.
Luzardo earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 13.1 for the season, rising from sixth to second in season player rankings, trailing only Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (13.9). Luzardo rises to lead NL pitchers, passing previous leader Spencer Strider of the Braves (12.7).
American League Player of the Day
Anthony Rizzo of the Yankees homered, doubled and went 4-for-4, scoring three times and driving in two runs, in the 8-5 win over the Royals.
Rizzo earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 6.4 for the season, seventh among AL batters.
National League Batter of the Day
Christian Encarnacion-Strand of the Reds went 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in two runs, in the 7-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
This was Encarnacion-Strand’s Box-Toppers debut, his first career Player of the Game honor. Encarnacion-Strand made his Major League debut July 17 and was playing in his seventh career game.
