About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani of the Angels continues to lead both American League pitcher and batters in Box-Toppers points, despite being out for the remainder of the season. Plus, Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves continues to lead NL batters.
Strider leads
Strider leads Box-Toppers season player rankings with 21.1 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. He leads over second-place Ohtani (19.4 points) and over second-place NL pitcher Jesus Luzardo of the Marlins (17.8).
Ohtani leads AL pitchers and batters
Ohtani leads AL pitchers for the 14th straight weekly player rankings report and leads AL batters for the 18th straight weekly report.
His 19.4 Box-Toppers points ranks ahead of second-place AL pitcher Kevin Gausman of the Blue Jays (18.7) and ahead of second-place AL batter Kyle Tucker of the Astros (12.5).
Ohtani has earned exactly half his points as a pitcher (9.7) and half as a batter (9.7). His pitching season was shut down when it was learned in late August he had a ligament tear in his pitching elbow. Ohtani also shut down his season as a batter this week with a strained right oblique. Ohtani this week underwent surgery to fix his elbow and is expected to be able to hit in 2024 but not be able to pitch again until 2025. He is a free agent, so his status of returning to the Angels is up in the air.
While Box-Toppers adds all of Ohtani’s points together and counts the overall total when ranking him as an AL pitcher and an AL batter, if they are separated, here is how Ohtani would rank:
Blake Snell @Padres (14.7 Box-Toppers points, 6th among NL pitchers) earned no B-T points in April & May. He earned his 1st B-T point June 5.
— Box-Toppers (@BoxToppers) September 22, 2023
Gerrit Cole @Yankees (15.0 B-T pts, 6th among AL pitchers) had just 2.0 B-T points over May, June & July.https://t.co/R6qDWMD3YL
Spencer Strider @Braves rises this week to lead NL pitchers in Box-Toppers points over 2022-23:
— Box-Toppers (@BoxToppers) September 22, 2023
1—Strider 34.5
2—Zac Gallen @Dbacks 34.4
3—Julio Urias @Dodgers 30.4
4—Zack Wheeler @Phillies 29.1
5—Sandy Alcantara @Marlins 28.1
6—Blake Snell @Padres 27.8
His 9.7 points as a batter would rank third among AL batters.
His 9.7 points as a pitcher would rank 24th among AL pitchers.
National League batters
Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves leads the category for the third week with 10.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place NL batter Pete Alonso of the Mets (10.5).
Acuna ranks 35th among all players.
Acuna’s current 10.7 point total would equal the lowest Box-Toppers point to lead a league category in a regular-length season. In 2016, Nolan Arenado of the Rockies led NL batters with 10.7 points, the lowest total to lead any category in a regular-length season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
