Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Saturday’s World Series Game 2.
The Los Angeles Dodgers win 4-2 to take a 2-0 lead over the New York Yankees in the best-of-seven-game series.
Yamamoto struck out four over 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run, one hit and two walks.
Yamamoto becomes the third player to win Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors twice this postseason, joining Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal and Mets pitcher Jose Quintana. Yamamoto was also Player of the Game Oct. 11 in the NL Division Series Game 5 win over the Padres.
Yoshinobu earned 6.4 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 121st overall and 48th among National League pitchers. He ranks eighth among all NL rookies.
With 6 1/3 innings pitched, this was Yamamoto’s longest outing since June 7, when he pitched seven innings in a regular season win over the Yankees. Yamamoto won Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors and NL Player of the Day honors, a total of 1.7 Box-Toppers points. It was his final Player of the Game honor of the 2024 regular season as he went on the injured list shortly after that, on June 16, did not return until Sept. 10, and did not win Player of the Game honors in his final four starts.
Yamamoto had a Box-Toppers game score Saturday of +5.1, best among the game’s players. Dodgers top batter was left fielder Teoscar Hernandez with a +1.0 game score (HR 2-4 R 2BI). Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani had a -3.0 game score (0-3 BB K).
Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon had the game’s lowest game score of -7.9 in the loss (3.1IP 6H 4R 0BB 3K L). Two Yankees relievers both had +2.1 game scores, Tim Hill (1.1IP 0H 0R 0BB K ND) and Clay Holmes (1.1IP 0H 0R BB 2K ND). Yankees top batter, right fielder Juan Soto, had a +1.0 game score (HR 2-4 2R BI). Yankees center fielder Aaron Judge had a -4.0 game score (0-4 3K).
The series takes Sunday off for travel and resumes Monday with Game 3 in New York.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day. (No Box-Toppers points are awarded in postseason games.)
