Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Monday’s World Series Game 3.
The Los Angeles Dodgers win 4-2 to take a 3-0 lead over the New York Yankees in the best-of-seven-game series.
Buehler struck out five over five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks.
Buehler becomes the fourth player to win Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors twice this postseason, joining Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, Mets pitcher Jose Quintana and teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who did it in Game 2 Saturday. Buehler was also Player of the Game Oct. 16 in the NL Championship Series Game 3 win over the Mets.
Buehler now has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors more times this postseason (twice) than he did during the regular season (once). He had 1.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 524th overall and 149th among NL pitchers. Buehler, 30, was limited to 16 starts in 2024 after missing much of 2022 and all of 2023 recovering from Tommy John surgery. His time was also limited in 2024 due to a hip injury. In 2021, he had 16.7 Box-Toppers points with the Dodgers, 10th among all players and eighth among NL pitchers.
The only time Buehler earned Player of the Game honors in the regular season was May 18, when he was also NL Player of the Day. That was his first Player of the Game honor in more than two years as he battled injury.
Buehler had a Box-Toppers game score Monday of +6.0, best among the game’s players. Dodgers top batter was first baseman Freddie Freeman with a +1.0 game score (HR 1-3 R 2BI). Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani had a -2.0 game score (0-3 R 0BI BB K) as he worked through a shoulder separation injury suffered in Saturday’s Game 2.
Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt had the game’s lowest game score of -6.8 (2.2IP 2H 3R 4BB 3K L). Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes, used in relief, had a +1.2 game score (1.2IP 0H 0R 0BB K ND). Yankees top batter was Alex Verdugo with a +1.0 game score (HR 1-3 R 2BI). Yankees center fielder Aaron Judge had a -3.0 game score (0-3 BB K).

World Series Game 4, Dodgers lead Yankees, 3-0
Tuesday’s pitching matchup (for more, see matchups chart below):
Dodgers—Ben Casparius, 0.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024. Casparius has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. He made his Major League debut Aug. 31 and made three regular-season appearances and three postseason appearances, all in relief.
The Dodgers, depleted at starting pitching due to injury, plan to use a series of relief pitchers, each pitching a maximum of one to three innings. It would be their fourth postseason game to employ the bullpen strategy, in which they have won two games (Oct. 9 with eight pitchers in the NLDS Game 4 win against the Padres and Oct. 20 with seven pitchers in the NLCS Game 6 win against the Mets) and lost one (Oct. 14 with five pitchers in the NLCS Game 2).
Yankees—Luis Gil, 17.4 points, sixth overall and second among AL pitchers.
Gil has the most 2024 Box-Toppers points of any player in the World Series and is the only player still active this postseason in the overall top 10 in Box-Toppers points. Gil got off to a hot start but struggled in the second half of the season, earning only 4.0 of his 17.4 points after June 4. He’s made just one postseason start, Oct. 18 in the ALCS Game 4 win over the Guardians, but was not Player of the Game.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day. (No Box-Toppers points are awarded in postseason games.)
