Relief pitcher Blake Treinen is Box-Toppers Player of the Game Wednesday as the Dodgers defeat the Yankees to win the 2024 World Series in five games.
The Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees 7-6 to win the best-of-seven game series, 4-1.
Treinen struck out three over 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk. Treinen took the mound with two outs in the sixth inning with runners at first and second base and the Yankees leading 6-5. Treinen pitched through the eighth inning, holding the Yankees scoreless and allowing only one hit, a double to Aaron Judge, through 42 pitches. Meanwhile, Dodgers batters took the lead 7-6 in the top of the eighth inning, allowing Treinen to earn the win.
Treinen earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points in the 2024 regular season, 480th among all players and 135th among NL pitchers. He earned Player of the Game honors twice in the regular season, on Aug. 29 and Sept. 22. He has 23.0 career Box-Toppers points from 2015-24, including earning 10.0 points in 2018 with the Athletics, his best season, when he was first among American League closing pitchers.
Treinen had a game-best +3.1 Box-Toppers game score Wednesday. Teammate Walker Buehler, normally a starter but serving as closer, had the second-best game score of +3.0 (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K Sv), earning his first career save. Dodgers top batter was right fielder Mookie Betts with a +1.0 game score (SF 1-3 R 2BI). Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani had a -4.0 game score (0-4 K).
Dodgers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty had the game’s lowest Box-Toppers game score of -10.9 (1.1IP 4H 4R BB K ND).
Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole had a -0.8 Box-Toppers game score (6.2IP 4H 5R 0ER 4BB 6K ND). After four innings, Cole had a +5.0 game score, but in the fifth inning, he gave up four hits and allowed five unearned runs after two Yankees errors. Cole retired five more batters in the sixth and seventh innings and exited with a 6-5 lead after throwing a game-high 108 pitches.
Reliever Tommy Kahnle, who earned the loss, had a -7.0 game score, lowest among all Yankees players (0IP 2H 2R BB 0K L). He took the mound in the eighth inning, allowing two hits and walking one, loading the bases, before being pulled. Two runners he allowed on base—Enrique Hernandez and Tommy Edman—scored the tying and go-ahead runs, both on sacrifice flies.
Reliever Mark Leiter Jr. had a +1.2 game score, closing the game for the Yankees in the ninth inning (0.2IP 0H 0R 0BB K ND).

Dodgers overcome starting pitching weakness to win
The New York Yankees held dominating Box-Toppers points advantages over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series. But for the third straight postseason series, the Dodgers overcame their handicap of being severely depleted at starting pitching to prove victorious.
Both teams had the best record in their league in 2024. The Dodgers had the best overall winning percentage (.605), while the Yankees led American League teams (.580), third among all teams behind the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies (.586).
However, the Yankees finished higher in Box-Toppers team rankings for the season, with its players accumulating a combined 120.9 Box-Toppers points, fourth overall and first among American League teams. Meanwhile, the Dodgers finished eighth overall with 113.7 Box-Toppers points, sixth among National League teams and the lowest among the six NL playoff teams.
The Yankees held Box-Toppers points advantages over the Dodgers in most comparisons between the teams, but especially in starting pitching, after injuries prevented two of the Dodgers’ top starters from 2024—Tyler Glasnow and Gavin Stone—from appearing in the postseason.
Interestingly, Jack Flaherty, the team’s lone starter who was both healthy and not coming off a recent injury, started two games, did not earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game in either and was particularly ineffective in the Game 5 win. On the other hand, two Dodgers starters who spent much of the season out injured, did earn Player of the Game honors in two of the games: Yoshinobu Yamamoto (Game 2) and Walker Buehler (Game 3). Buehler almost earned Player of the Game honors again in Game 5, earning the save.
Box-Toppers preseason prediction
Despite Box-Toppers giving the Dodgers little chance to win the series in the days before the start of the Fall Classic, Box-Toppers did predict the Dodgers to win the World Series before the season began. But Box-Toppers predicted the Dodgers over the Astros, with the Yankees finishing in fourth place in the AL East with a .500 record. In the preseason top 30 team rankings, Box-Toppers had the Dodgers in first and the Yankees in 24th.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day. (No Box-Toppers points are awarded in postseason games.)
