Pitchers earned Player of the Game honors in 69 of the 94 games this week (73.4 percent) while batters won in 25 games (26.6 percent). Pitchers increased their share of Player of the Game honors won overall from 67.2 percent last week to 68.0 percent this week (512 times in 753 total games). Batters have won 241 times in 753 games (32.0 percent).
Batters have won 295.5 of the total 898.4 Box-Toppers points awarded this season. Their share of points decreased from last week (33.6 percent) to this week (32.9 percent), falling to under a one-third share. (Pitchers have 602.9 points or 67.1 percent.) The all-time low share of points for batters in a single season is 38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.) While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009 and is on track to plummet to a record-shattering low in 2024.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
