Yankees pitcher Luis Gil is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, regaining the lead in season player rankings.

Also Wednesday, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal rises to ninth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.

Player of the Day

Gil struck out nine over eight innings, allowing one run, two hits and two walks, in the 2-1 win over the Angels.

Gil earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 11.7 for the season, rising from second to first place overall, passing previous leader, Braves pitcher Chris Sale (9.7 points), who falls to second place. Gil extends his lead among American League pitchers, ahead of second-place Joe Ryan of the Twins (7.7 points).

Gil becomes the first player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2024. It is his first season with 10 or more points. His previous high was 1.0 point in 2021 with the Yankees, his only previous point before 2024.

Gil previously led Box-Toppers season player rankings for three days, beginning May 23 and ending May 26, when Sale passed him.

National League Player of the Day is Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sanchez.

Sanchez earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 3.4 for the season, 30th among NL pitchers.

National League Batter of the Day is Willy Adames of the Brewers.
