About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Yankees pitcher Luis Gil continues his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings, topping the list for the sixth straight week.
Meanwhile, there are two new category leaders this week: Zack Wheeler of the Phillies rises to lead National League pitchers and Bryce Harper of the Phillies rises to lead NL batters. Meanwhile, Aaron Judge of the Yankees continues to lead AL batters and Gil continues his lead among AL pitchers.
Gil leads
Gil has 13.4 Box-Toppers points to lead all players, picking up no points in the past week. Despite earning his last Player of the Game honor more than three weeks ago (June 4) he leads season player rankings by 2.0 points.
Gil leads over second-place player, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal (11.4 points). He also leads Skubal among AL pitchers.
National League pitchers
Zack Wheeler of the Phillies rises to lead NL pitchers this week, passing last week’s leader, Shota Imanaga of the Cubs, who falls to fourth place.
Though Wheeler and three other NL pitchers—Tyler Glasnow of the Dodgers, Chris Sale of the Braves and Imanaga—all have 10.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024, Wheeler ranks ahead because he has the most 2023 points (14.7), Glasnow ranks second (12.7), Sale ranks third (8.7) and Imanaga ranks fourth (0.0).
Wheeler ranks fourth among all players.
National League batters
Bryce Harper of the Phillies rises to lead NL batters this week with 6.7 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader Francisco Lindor of the Mets, who falls to second place (6.4).
Harper ranks 35th overall.
American League batters
Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters for the third straight week with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He is ahead of second-place Juan Soto of the Yankees (7.0 points).
Judge ranks 17th among all players.
Box-Toppers almanac
Pitchers again won most of this week’s Player of the Game honors, but batters in recent weeks have steadily increased their overall share of Player of the Game honors won for the season.
Pitchers won Player of the Game honors in 53 of the 93 games played (57.0 percent), while batters won in 40 (43.0 percent). (That exactly matched pitchers’ and batters’ shares of Player of the Game honors won in the 93 games for the previous week ending June 20.) Batters’ overall share of Player of the Game honors won increased from 34.4 percent last week to 35.0 percent this week (426 times in 1,216 total games). Pitchers have won 790 times or 65.0 percent.
Batters also made overall gains in share of Box-Toppers points won but are still on pace to have their lowest share of points in the 30 seasons of Box-Toppers tracking.
Batters have won 35.5 percent of all points (514.9 out of 1,449.4), while pitchers have won 64.5 percent (934.5 points). Batters increased their overall share from 35.0 percent last week.
The all-time low share of points for batters in a single season is 38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.)
Batters have made gains in recent weeks in the share of points earned, moving from 32.8 percent four weeks ago to 35.5 percent this week, a 2.7 percent gain. Yet, that’s still 2.6 percent from that all-time low of 38.1 percent. But if batters continue to earn the share of points they have in the past month or so, it is possible they could avoid breaking the record for all-time low points share.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
