Yankees pitcher Luis Gil, who leads all players with 14.4 Box-Toppers points, was not selected to participate in the All-Star Game. Joining him as key All-Star snubs are Dylan Cease of the Padres, who leads National League pitchers with 12.4 points and outfielder Brenton Doyle of the Rockies, who leads NL batters with 8.7 points.
The other category leader, Aaron Judge of the Yankees, who leads AL batters with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, was elected as an AL outfield starter.
While Box-Toppers’ top players in three of the four categories were not selected for the All-Star game, the second-ranked player in each category were selected:
Tarik Skubal of the Tigers, second overall and second among AL pitchers with 13.4 points.
Chris Sale of the Braves, second among NL pitchers and fourth overall with 12.4 points.
Bryce Harper of the Phillies, second among NL batters with 7.7 points, was voted to start for the NL at first base.
Gil has led longest but was largely quiet in June
Not only is Gil the current leader in Box-Toppers season player rankings but he has led far longer than any other player, a total of 46 days, nearly 40 percent of the season. That includes a 39-day stretch from May 29 to July 6. Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta has led second-longest among all players this season, a total of 15 days, from April 12 to April 26. (Peralta now has 8.7 points, ninth among NL pitchers, and was also left off the NL All-Star team.)
However, Gil went more than a month without winning Player of the Game honors. He won June 4 and then did not win again until July 13. Those who select players for All-Star teams, including fan voters and team managers, seem to focus on who is hot at the moment in mid- or late-June and make their selection based on that narrow window of time.
Box-Toppers snub list could be an All-Star team
Several other players who either led or were among leaders at their positions in their league in Box-Toppers points were also not selected as an All-Star, the snubs nearly enough to make up a third All-Star team:
Tanner Bibee of the Guardians, 11.0 points, eighth overall and fourth among AL pitchers.
George Kirby of the Mariners, 10.7 points, ninth overall and fifth among AL pitchers.
Josh Hader of the Astros, 7.0 points, first among AL closing pitchers, 46th overall.
Matt Chapman of the Giants, 6.5 points, first among NL third basemen, 54th overall.
Francisco Lindor of the Mets, 6.4 points, first among NL shortstops, 55th overall.
Luis Garcia Jr. of the Nationals, 6.2 points, first among NL second basemen, 58th overall.
Ian Happ of the Cubs, 5.0 points, second among NL outfielders, 85th overall.
Byron Buxton of the Twins, 5.0 points, third among AL outfielders, 90th overall.
Zach Neto of the Angels, 4.5 points, first among AL shortstops, 106th overall.
Jose Miranda of the Twins, 4.5 points, first among AL third basemen, 107th overall.
Cal Raleigh of the Mariners, 4.2 points, first among AL catchers, 112th overall.
Major League Baseball’s 2024 All-Star Game is Tuesday, July 16, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
Starting pitchers
A Box-Toppers look at Tuesday’s pitching matchups
A Box-Toppers look at the upcoming day’s probable pitching matchups. Teams are paired below with visiting teams on top and home teams on the bottom. Each team’s starting pitcher is shown with their Box-Toppers point total from 2024 (’24), this year and last year (’23-24), over a six-year period (’19-24) and their career point total.Back to top
Game | Starter | ’24 | ’23-24 | ’19‑24 | Career |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
NL | Skenes, Paul 5005 | 8.0 | 8.0 | 8.0 | 8.0 |
AL | Burnes, Corbin 4029 | 7.7 | 19.4 | 60.6 | 63.6 |
What are those numbers after players' names?
Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes is starting for the National League and Orioles pitcher Corbin Burnes is starting for the American League.
Neither are among Box-Toppers’ overall top 10 players or top 10 pitchers in their league this season.
Skenes has 8.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 33rd among all players and 15th among NL pitchers. Though he doesn’t rank among top leaders in points, he’s earned all his points in the past two months, making his Box-Toppers debut with his first career Player of the Game honor on May 17.
Burnes has 7.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 35th overall and 16th among AL pitchers. However, Burnes’s 19.4 points over 2023-24 is 10th among AL pitchers over that span. (He was with the Brewers in 2023.) His 60.6 Box-Toppers points over 2019-24 is seventh among AL pitchers over that span.
No points
Only one player among the 74 selected for the All-Star teams has no Box-Toppers points in 2024—Willi Castro of the Twins. In fact, Castro has not earned Box-Toppers points since 2022 when he was with the Tigers.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
