Soto hit a third-inning double that drove in two runs, in the American League’s 5-3 win Tuesday over the National League. Later that inning, he scored on a single by David Fry of the Guardians, which tied the game at 3-3. Soto went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in two runs.
Soto had a Box-Toppers game score Tuesday of +3.0. Two other AL players also had +3.0 game scores, both pitchers, and in cases of game score ties, batters rank ahead of pitchers, making Soto Player of the Game. The pitchers with +3.0 game scores:
Mason Miller of the Athletics (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K W).
Kirby Yates of the Rangers (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K ND).
Jarren Duran of the Red Sox was named All-Star Game Most Valuable Player, hitting a fifth-inning two-run homer, which put the AL ahead 5-3. Duran went 1-for-2, scoring once and driving in two runs, recording a +2.0 Box-Toppers game score, fourth-highest among AL players Tuesday.
As it was a low-scoring game and because pitchers appeared for no more than one inning, Box-Toppers game scores were low. Soto and Duran were the only AL batters with positive game scores.
Soto was elected as a starting AL All-Star outfielder. His 8.5 Box-Toppers points in 2024 is second-most among AL batters, ranked behind teammate Aaron Judge. Though Judge and Soto both have 8.5 points for the season, Judge ranks ahead because he has more 2023 points—12.0 vs. 9.0.
Soto’s 9.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023 with the Padres was sixth among NL batters. His 17.5 points over 2023-24 is second among AL batters, behind Judge’s 20.5. His 34.0 Box-Toppers points over 2019-24 is fourth among AL batters over that span.
Starting pitcher for the American League, Corbin Burnes of the Orioles, had a -1.0 Box-Toppers game score (1IP H 0R BB 0K ND).
National League starting pitcher Paul Skenes of the Pirates had a 0.0 game score (1IP 0H 0R BB 0K ND).
Top NL batter in the game was Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers, who hit a third-inning, three-run homer to give the NL a 3-0 lead. Ohtani went 1-for-2, scoring once and driving in three runs, earning a +3.0 game score.
The losing pitcher in the game for the NL, Hunter Greene of the Reds, had a -5.0 game score (1IP 2H 2R 0BB 0K L).
Two pitchers had -8.0 game scores in the game, lowest among all participating players:
Tanner Houck of the Red Sox, pitching for the AL (1IP 4H 3R 0BB K ND).
Logan Webb of the Giants, pitching for the NL (1IP 3H 3R BB K ND).
Box-Toppers highest-ranking player, Yankees pitcher Luis Gil (14.4 Box-Toppers points) was not selected to play in the All-Star Game. Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal had the most Box-Toppers points among All-Star participants—his 13.4 points is second overall and second among AL pitchers. Skubal recorded a +1.0 Box-Toppers game score (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 0K ND), pitching the second inning for the American League.

Just as All-Star Game statistics don’t count in a player’s regular season statistics, no Box-Toppers points are awarded for the All-Star Game.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
