Box-Toppers almanac
Pitchers won 60.6 percent of all Player of the Game honors this week (57 times in 94 games) while batters won 39.4 percent (37 of 94).
While pitchers still won a large majority of this week’s Player of the Game honors, batters’ share of Player of the Game honors for the season increased slightly from 37.1 percent to 37.2 percent (644 times in 1,729 games). Pitchers have won 62.8 percent of 2024 Player of the Game honors (1,085 times in 1,729 games).
Batters’ overall share of Box-Toppers points won for the season also increased this week from 37.3 percent last week to 37.4 percent this week. Batters have now won 770.6 of the 2,057.8 points awarded this season, while pitchers have won 1,287.2 (62.6 percent).
The all-time low share of points for batters in a season is 38.1 percent in 2022 and batters are still behind that mark, but at 37.4 percent, they are at a high point for the season, are generally trending upward and are now within 1.0 percent of that all-time low with seven weeks left in the season. (Batters had 40.7 percent of all points in 2023.)
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
