Player of the Day

Sale struck out nine over six innings, allowing two runs, four hits and one walk, in the 7-3 win over the Red Sox.

While one other Player of the Game winner Saturday also had a +6.0 game score—Giants pitcher Logan Webb (5IP H 2R 0ER BB 5K W in the 6-2 win over the Mariners)—Sale won overall Player of the Day honors because he had more innings pitched than Webb (six vs. five).

Sale earned 19.1 Box-Toppers points in 2024, fifth overall and fourth among National League pitchers. He also has 172.4 career Box-Toppers points, 14th-most since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He also ranks fourth among active, signed players in career points, third among active NL pitchers, behind Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers (272.4) and Justin Verlander of the Giants (247.0).

American League Player of the Day is Astros pitcher Framber Valdez.

American League Batter of the Day

Corey Seager of the Rangers hit two doubles and went 2-for-2, driving in four runs, in the 4-3 win over the Athletics.

Seager earned 3.5 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 44th among AL batters.

Notable

Royals closing pitcher Austin Cox won Player of the Game honors Saturday for the second time during the 2025 spring training season.

Cox (2IP 0H 0R BB 2K Sv in the 13-7 win over the Reds) was also Player of the Game March 9 in the 5-2 win over the Brewers (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K W).

Cox has 1.0 career Box-Toppers point, earned in his only Major League season in 2023 with the Royals, when he played 24 games. He pitched in 42 minor league games in 2024.

Saturday’s games

There were 17 completed spring training games between two Major League teams Saturday. (Spring games featuring club prospects were also played but are excluded here). In the 17 games, there were 11 Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games. In four of Saturday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Two games ended in a tie (Tigers vs. Phillies and Yankees vs. Rays). No Player of the Game honors are awarded in tie games.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day:

  • Sale would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Valdez would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.

  • Davis and Seager would have each earned 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day.

  • All of Saturday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
