Diamondbacks pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Friday’s spring training games.
Other Player of the Game winners Friday include Red Sox pitcher Richard Fitts, Brandon Drury of the White Sox, Orioles pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano, Yankees pitcher Carlos Carrasco and Jared Oliva of the Brewers.
Player of the Day
Rodríguez struck out six over 3 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings, allowing no walks, in the 2-1 win over the Reds. Rodríguez did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Reds tied the game after he exited.
Rodríguez had a Box-Toppers game score of +9.2, best among all Diamondbacks players and highest among all Friday Player of the Game winners.
Rodríguez earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2024 with the Diamondbacks, making 10 starts, missing about four months on the injured list with a shoulder injury. Rodríguez earned 13.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023 with the Tigers, 12th among American League pitchers.
American League Player of the Day
Red Sox pitcher Richard Fitts struck out four over 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 9-4 win over the Marlins.
Fitts played in four games in 2024 but did not earn Player of the Game honors in any of them and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points. His rookie status is still intact for the 2025 season.
American League Batter of the Day
Brandon Drury of the White Sox hit two home runs, including a three-run homer, in the 7-3 win over the Reds. Drury also doubled and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in five runs.
Drury earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2024 with the Angels, playing in 97 games. In 2023, he had 7.5 Box-Toppers points with the Angels, fifth among AL batters.
National League Batter of the Day
Jared Oliva of the Brewers hit a three-run homer and went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 11-5 win over the Giants.
Oliva played in 26 Major League games in 2020 and 2021 with the Pirates but did not earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in any of them and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points. Since then, he has played in Mexico and in the minor leagues.
Notable
Orioles pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second time during the 2025 spring training season.
Sugano (3.1IP H 0R BB 4K W in the 10-0 win over the Twins) was also overall Player of the Day on March 9 in the 4-3 win over the Twins (3IP 0H 0R 0BB 5K W).
Sugano, 35, has pitched 12 seasons in Japan’s top professional league but has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
Also notable
Yankees pitcher Carlos Carrasco has the most career Box-Toppers points among Friday’s spring training Player of the Game winners.
Carrasco (3.1IP 2H R BB 6K ND in the 6-5 win over the Phillies) has 113.2 career Box-Toppers points, fifth among active AL pitchers. Carrasco, 37, earned 1.7 points in each of the past two seasons—in 2023 with the Mets and in 2024 with the Guardians. He earned 9.7 points in 2022 with the Mets, 27th among NL pitchers.
Friday’s games
There were 16 completed spring training games between two Major League teams Friday. (Spring games featuring club prospects were also played but are excluded here). In the 16 games, there were nine Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games. In five of Friday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
Two games ended in a tie (Tigers vs. Pirates and Cardinals vs. Mets). No Player of the Game honors are awarded in tie games.
Scoring
No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day:
Rodríguez would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.
Fitts would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.
Drury and Oliva would have each earned 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day.
All of Friday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
