Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw adds to lead in overall Box-Toppers player rankings

Three of the four leaders in Box-Toppers player categories added to their point totals during the past week.

The only one who didn’t (Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies) had a good reason—he underwent surgery and is out for the season.

BTP: Box-Toppers points

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw added 1.7 Box-Toppers points during the past week and now has 23.8 to lead all players and all National League pitchers.

Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer added 1.0 Box-Toppers point during the past week and now has 21.1 to lead all American League pitchers.

Jose Abreu of the White Sox added 1.5 Box-Toppers points during the past week and now has 14.5 to lead all AL batters.

Tulowitzki, on the disabled list and out for the season, was unable to add to point total—he leads NL batters with 11.6 Box-Toppers points.

These four players have led these categories since the July 3 player rankings report. In that week, Kershaw (then with 14.4 Box-Toppers points) passed Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwight, who had 14.0 Box-Toppers points. Wainwright now has 15.0 points and ranks ninth among all players and fourth among NL pitchers. Scherzer (then with 14.4 Box-Toppers points) passed Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, who had 12.7 Box-Toppers points. Tanaka, who went on the disabled list in early July, still has 12.7 points and ranks ninth among AL pitchers.

Notable: Angels pitcher Garrett Richards, ranked eighth overall with 15.7 Box-Toppers points, tore his knee tendon this week and is out for the season. He ranks fifth among AL pitchers and has the most Box-Toppers points among all Angels players.

BTP: Box-Toppers points

While the Athletics have led Box-Toppers team rankings since the July 13 report, their lead has never been so narrow. The second-place Los Angeles Angels are only 1.0 Box-Toppers point behind with 98.5. And the National League-leading Los Angeles Dodgers are now just 3.9 points behind, with 95.6.

The Athletics are led by pitchers Scott Kazmir (14.1 Box-Toppers points, ranked seventh among American League pitchers) and Jon Lester (12.0 Box-Toppers points, ranked 12th among AL pitchers). Kazmir scored the Athletics’ lone Box-Toppers point this week.

The Athletics have the second-best record in baseball and the second-best in the American League, behind the Angels. The Athletics have a .587 winning percentage, two games behind the Angels, with .603.

The Angels are led by pitcher Garrett Richards (15.7 Box-Toppers points, ranked eighth among all players). However, Richards suffered a season-ending injury this week (torn knee tendon). Pitcher Matt Shoemaker now has the most points among active Angels players (8.0, ranked 27th among AL pitchers).

The Dodgers continue to lead all NL teams, as they have since the July 3 team rankings report. The Dodgers, who fell from second to third in overall rankings, are led by pitchers Clayton Kershaw (23.8 Box-Toppers points, overall leader) and Zack Greinke (13.8 Box-Toppers points, ranked fifth among NL pitchers).

The Dodgers have the third-best winning percentage in the NL (.558), behind the Washington Nationals (.579) and the Milwaukee Brewers (.559). The Nationals have 87.3 Box-Toppers points, in sixth place overall—they had the best week of all teams, picking up 8.0 Box-Toppers points and rising from seventh to sixth place in team rankings. The Brewers have 81.5 Box-Toppers points and are in eighth place in team rankings.

The Kansas City Royals rose into the top 10 team rankings list, picking up 5.0 Box-Toppers points in the past week, giving him 80.6 for the season, rising from 11th to 10th place. The Toronto Blue Jays fell out of the top 10, falling from eighth to 11th place, picking up only 2.0 Box-Toppers points in the past week, giving them 80.0 for the season.

The Boston Red Sox remain the lowest-ranked team with 50.0 Box-Toppers points.

Angels' Shoemaker tops players for Thursday, Aug. 21; Kershaw, Bumgarner bolster spots among Box-Toppers top 3 players

Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker is Thursday’s Player of the Day, while Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw and Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner bolstered their spots in the top three in Box-Toppers player rankings.

Shoemaker pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out nine, in the 2-0 win over the Red Sox.

Kershaw, Thursday’s National League Player of the Day, extends his lead among all players in Box-Toppers player rankings. (See the updated top 10 player list on the home page.) Kershaw struck out 10 over eight innings, allowing one run, in the 2-1 win over the Padres. Kershaw earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 23.8 for the season. He is now only 2.3 points behind his season high of 26.1 Box-Toppers points he scored in 2010.

Bumgarner maintained his third-place spot in Box-Toppers player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Thursday. (See the updated top 10 player list on the home page.) Bumgarner (7IP 12K W in the 5-3 win over the Cubs) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 18.9 for the season. He ranks second among NL pitchers, behind Kershaw.

No batters earned Box-Toppers points Thursday because no batters earned Player of the Game honors—in all nine games, pitchers beat batters as top player of the game.

Notables: Twins pitcher Phil Hughes rose to 14th place in Box-Toppers player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Thursday. Hughes (7IP R 8K W in the 4-1 win over the Indians) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 13.1 for the season. He ranks eighth among American League pitchers.

Braves pitcher Julio Teheran rose to 18th place in Box-Toppers player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Thursday. Teheran (6IP 0R W in the 8-0 win over the Reds) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 12.4 for the season. He ranks seventh among NL pitchers.

Rays pitcher Alex Cobb becomes the 33rd player with 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points this season after earning Player of the Game honors Thursday. Cobb (7IP 0R 6K W in the 1-0 win over the Tigers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.7 for the season. He ranks 29th among all players and 15th among AL pitchers.

Cubs pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada is Player of the Game in the completion Thursday of a rain-shortened game against the Giants started Tuesday. Wada (5IP 0R 3K W in the 2-1 win) actually did all his work Tuesday, though earns the Box-Toppers point for Thursday. Initially, the game was ruled a rain-shortened, 4 1/2-inning final and a Cubs win Tuesday. At the time, Anthony Rizzo was deemed Player of the Game. He went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs, giving him a Box-Toppers game score of 3.0. However, after the Giants protested and baseball ordered the game be resumed Thursday, the Cubs win was taken away, as was Rizzo’s Box-Toppers point for Player of the Game. After the game resumed, Rizzo went 0-for-2, reducing his Box-Toppers game score to 1.0. Wada’s Box-Toppers game score of 2.0 was enough to beat out Rizzo for Player of the Game.

Shoemaker receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day. Kershaw receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day.

All of Thursday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) receive 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

BTP: Box-Toppers points

With six weeks to go in the season, the players atop Box-Toppers four main categories have such commanding leads, they may have already wrapped up Box-Toppers Players of the Season honors.

And that includes a player—Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies, who leads National League batters in Box-Toppers points—who is now out for the season and who, in the end, will have played only slightly more than half the season.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw continues to lead all players with 22.1 Box-Toppers points. His nearest rival among NL pitchers, Madison Bumgarner of the Giants, has 17.9 Box-Toppers points, 4.2 points behind.

Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer continues to lead American League pitchers in Box-Toppers points with 20.1. His nearest rival, Felix Hernandez of the Mariners, has 15.8 Box-Toppers points, 4.3 points behind.

Jose Abreu of the White Sox continues to lead AL batters in Box-Toppers points, with 13.0. His nearest rival, Josh Donaldson of the Athletics, has 9.0 Box-Toppers points, 4.0 points behind.

And most notably, Tulowitzki continues to lead NL batters with 11.6 Box-Toppers points. His nearest rival, Freddie Freeman of the Braves, has 7.7 Box-Toppers points, 3.9 points behind.

If any of these four players were to stop playing now, there would be a good chance that no player in their category would catch up to them in Box-Toppers points.

In other words, now, in mid-August, the picture seems pretty clear on who the favorites should be for Cy Young and Most Valuable Player awards.

But naming Tulowitzki NL MVP may be problematic because he has not played since July 19 and now will not play the rest of the year because he is having season-ending hip surgery today. He has played in only 91 games this season. The fact that he is playing for a team with the worst winning percentage in the NL (.388) probably could be forgiven when it came time for MVP voting. But his limited playing time probably can not and will not.

And yet, it’s not just Box-Toppers that says Tulowitzki was and is the most dominant player among NL batters this year. Baseball-Reference.com lists him as the top NL batter in the Wins Above Replacement statistic, with 5.7.

Can some NL batter equal or surpass his Box-Toppers point total for the season. It’s possible. But if Freeman, his closest rival, earns Box-Toppers points at the same rate he’s earned them this season, he will only have earned about 10.3 by the end of the season—still more than a point behind Tulowitzki.

Given Tulowitzki’s absence at the end of the season and the fact that no other NL batters have pulled away from the pack and given the fact that Kershaw is so dominating NL pitchers, 2014 may be the year voters decide to give both the Cy Young and MVP award to a pitcher—Kershaw.

Miguel Cabrera rises into top 10 list for Box-Toppers 'all-time' batters

Miguel Cabrera has moved into Box-Toppers ‘all-time’ top 10 batters list, passing Gary Sheffield.

Top 10 batters 'all-time'

Here are Box-Toppers' Top 10 'all-time' batters (record keeping began in 1995). The list includes four players who are currently active in the Majors. One, Manny Ramirez, who plays and coaches in the Minor Leagues. Another player, Alex Rodriguez, who is serving a drug suspension in 2014. And four retired players.

BTP: Box-Toppers points

Cabrera, who has 8.5 Box-Toppers points for the season, now has 124.2 for his career (2003-present) and passes Sheffield, who accumulated 124.1 Box-Toppers points from 1995-2009. (Sheffield’s career, however, began in 1988, before Box-Toppers record keeping began in 1995 and so he would likely have more total career points.)

Cabrera led all batters in Box-Toppers points in 2013 with 16.9. It was one of three seasons in which Cabrera has scored 15 or more Box-Toppers points. He has scored 10 or more points in a season five times.

Cabrera ranks 30th among all players in Box-Toppers points since record keeping began in 1995, just behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, the current season’s overall points leader (22.1), who also has 124.2 career Box-Toppers points. (Though Kershaw and Cabrera are tied in points, Kershaw is ranked higher because he has more points this season—22.1 vs. 8.5.)

Cabrera actually joined the ‘all-time’ top 10 batters list in July. It was the first change in membership in the list since May 2013, when David Ortiz of the Red Sox, then with 117.7 Box-Toppers points, supplanted Carlos Delgado, to rise into 10th place. Ortiz is now in eighth place with 130.4 Box-Toppers points.

Cabrera is one of four players currently active in the Major Leagues on the list, joining Albert Pujols, Jason Giambi and Ortiz. Alex Rodriguez, who leads the list, is suspended for 2014 for violating MLB’s performance enhancing drugs policy. Manny Ramirez is currently in the minor leagues as a coach and player with the Chicago Cubs/Iowa Cubs.
