About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Also Sunday, Twins pitcher Jake Odorizzi rises to seventh place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning American League Player of the Day honors.

Player of the Day—Woodruff struck out 10 over eight innings, allowing one run, one hit and no walks, in the 9-1 win over the Phillies.

Woodruff earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 4.0 for the season. He ranks 53rd among all players and 20th among National League pitchers.

American League Player of the Day—Twins pitcher Jake Odorizzi struck out nine over 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk, in the 7-0 win over the White Sox.

Odorizzi earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 7.4 for the season, rising to seventh place in season player rankings, third among AL pitchers, behind Justin Verlander of the Astros (12.1) and Shane Bieber of the Indians (7.7).

American League Batter of the Day—Austin Meadows of the Rays homered, doubled and went 4-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 6-3 win over the Indians.

National League Batter of the Day—Howie Kendrick of the Nationals homered and went 3-for-5, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 9-6 win over the Marlins.

Notable—Two pitchers earned Player of the Game honors for batting Sunday:

  • Rockies pitcher German Marquez (3B 1-1 0R 3BI in the 8-7 win over the Orioles) had a Box-Toppers game score of +3.0 for batting and a -5.9 score for pitching (6.1IP 7H 4R BB 4K ND). Marquez earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being Player of the Game, giving him 6.7 for the season, 13th among all players and fifth among NL pitchers.

  • Diamondbacks pitcher Luke Weaver (1-2 R BI in the 6-2 win over the Giants) had a Box-Toppers game score of +1.0 for batting and also separately had a game score of +1.0 for pitching (5IP 6H R 2BB 6K W). However, in cases of game score ties, batters beat pitchers, so in this case Sunday, Weaver the batter beat Weaver the pitcher on a tiebreaker. Weaver earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being Player of the Game, giving him 6.0 for the season, 20th among all players and 10th among NL pitchers.

This is the second and third time this season that a pitcher has earned Player of the Game honors for batting. Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke did it April 2. In 2018, pitchers earned Player of the Game honors for batting three times.

Debut—Lourdes Gurriel Jr. of the Blue Jays made his Box-Toppers debut Sunday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Gurriel (HR 2B 4-4 2R 2BI in the 10-1 win over the Padres) made his Major League debut April 20, 2018, and was playing in his 81st career game.

Scoring—Woodruff earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Odorizzi earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Meadows and Kendrick each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
