About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Also Wednesday, Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole rises to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors. Plus, Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom rises to second place in player rankings and Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler maintained his fifth-place spot in rankings after both earned Player of the Game honors.

Player of the Day—Mahle struck out 12 over six innings, allowing one run, three hits and two walks, in the 2-1 win over the Brewers.

Mahle earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 7.0 for the season, 18th among all players and 12th among National League pitchers.

American League Player of the Day—Twins pitcher Bailey Ober struck out six over four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 7-2 win over the Mariners. Ober did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because he did not pitch the required five innings for starters to earn the win. Ober was on a pitch limit and threw 63 pitches.

This was Ober’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Ober made his Major League debut May 18 and was playing in his fourth career game.

Twins pitcher Bailey Ober is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers AL Player of the Day.

National League Batter of the Day—Buster Posey of the Giants hit a three-run homer and went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 13-7 win over the Diamondbacks.

Posey earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 4.0 for the season, rising to eighth among NL batters.

Buster Posey of the Giants is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day.

American League Batter of the Day—Christian Arroyo of the Red Sox hit a pinch-hit, seventh-inning, go-ahead grand slam and went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 10-8 win over the Braves.

Christian Arroyo of the Red Sox is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day.

New leader—Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole rises to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Cole (8IP 4H 2R BB 4K W in the 3-2 win over the Blue Jays) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 13.4 for the season, rising from second to first place, passing previous leader, Rays pitcher Tyler Glasnow (12.7), who falls to third overall.

Cole previously led all players from May 12 to May 25 before he was passed by Glasnow, who had held the lead since May 26. Glasnow is now out indefinitely with a partially torn UCL and a flexor strain in his right arm, hoping to rehab to avoid Tommy John surgery, which usually requires a year or more of recovery time.

Cole also rises to lead among AL pitchers, passing Glasnow.

Cole now has 113.9 career Box-Toppers points, 56th among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. With his 1.0 point Wednesday, he passes four players on the “all-time” list—Sammy Sosa (113.2), Dan Haren (113.2), Chris Carpenter (113.3) and Royals pitcher Ervin Santana (113.4). He trails 55th-ranked player, Yankees pitcher Corey Kluber (114.1). Passing Santana, Cole now ranks 14th among active, signed players in career points, fifth among active AL pitchers.

Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Blue Jays.

deGrom—Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom rises from third to second in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

deGrom (3IP 0H 0R 0BB 8K ND in the 6-3 win over the Cubs) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 12.7 for the season, maintaining his lead among NL pitchers, ahead of Brandon Woodruff of the Brewers (11.4).

deGrom exited the start after three perfect innings with right shoulder soreness. It is the second straight game he’s exited early with injury (June 11), yet both times he earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. While deGrom did not pitch the required five innings to earn the win, he did pitch the minimum three innings for a pitcher to be automatically considered for Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. Had he pitched fewer than three innings, Player of the Game honors would have gone to Kevin Pillar (HR 2B 2-4 2R 2BI) with a Box-Toppers game score of +2.0.

deGrom’s +11.0 Box-Toppers game score was highest among all Mets players Wednesday. It was also tied for the highest among all 15 of Wednesday’s Player of the Game winners. But Mahle beat deGrom as overall Player of the Day because he earned the win and deGrom picked up a no-decision.

deGrom now has 118.1 career Box-Toppers points, 47th among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 1.0 point Wednesday, he passes Barry Zito (117.4) on the “all-time” list and now trails 46th-ranked player Carlos Delgado (118.7). deGrom ranks 13th among active, signed players in career Box-Toppers points, eighth among active NL pitchers.

Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Cubs.

Rankings—Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler maintains his fifth-place spot in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Wheeler (6IP 5H 0R 4BB 6K W in the 2-0 win over the Dodgers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 11.4 for the season. He ranks third among NL pitchers.

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Dodgers.

Debut—In addition to Ober, four other players made their Box-Toppers debut Wednesday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

  • Braves pitcher Johan Oviedo (7IP 6H 0R 0BB 4K ND in the 1-0 win over the Marlins) made his Major League debut Aug. 19, 2020, and was playing in his 13th career game.

  • Nationals pitcher Paolo Espino (5IP 3H 0R 0BB 2K W in the 3-1 win over the Pirates) made his Major League debut May 19, 2017, and was playing in his 29th career game.

  • Chas McCormick of the Astros (2HR 2-4 2R 3BI in the 8-4 win over the Rangers) made his Major League debut April 1 and was playing in his 40th career game.

  • Andrew Vaughn of the White Sox (2B 3-5 3R BI in the 8-7, 10-inning win over the Rays) made his Major League debut April 2 and was playing in his 54th career game.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
