About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

While Dalbec had the same +9.0 game score as both Urias and Guerrero, he ranked lower because he had fewer at bats than Urias (six vs. four) and fewer home runs than Guerrero (three vs. two). Also, while Dalbec’s +9.0 game score is the fifth-highest ranking for a batter earning Player of the Game honors in 2021, it ranks 199th among all Player of the Game winners for the season. There are 194 times in which pitchers have earned Player of the Game honors with game scores of +9.1 or better this season.

Bobby Dalbec of the Red Sox is Thursday’s Box-Toppers AL Player of the Day.

National League Batter of the Day—Colin Moran of the Pirates homered and went 4-for-5, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 11-7 win over the Cardinals.

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Thursday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Bobby Dalbec.

Colin Moran of the Pirates is Thursday’s Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day.

Notable—Royals pitcher Ervin Santana now has 114.4 career Box-Toppers points after earning his first Player of the Game honor in nearly four years Thursday.

Santana (2IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K W in the 6-4 win over the Mariners) rises to 56th among all players in career Box-Toppers points since player tracking began in 1995. With his 1.0 point Thursday, he passes Yankees pitcher Corey Kluber (114.1) on the “all-time” list and now trails 55th-ranked player Josh Beckett (114.9). Passing Kluber, Santana ranks 16th among active players in career points, fifth among active AL pitchers.

Santana last earned Player of the Game honors Sept. 13, 2017, when he was with the Twins. He had 16.1 Box-Toppers points in 2017, ninth overall and fifth among AL pitchers.

Due to injury, Santana was limited to five starts in 2018 with the Twins and three starts in 2019 with the White Sox and did not earn Box-Toppers points either season. He did not appear in the Major Leagues in 2020. This season, Santana, 38, has appeared mainly as a relief pitcher for the Royals.

Royals pitcher Ervin Santana is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Thursday’s win over the Mariners.

Scoring—Scherzer earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Dalbec earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Moran earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Thursday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
