This is the first time Verlander has led Box-Toppers season player rankings since Sept. 7, 2019, when he took the lead for one day with 24.8 Box-Toppers points, before being passed by then-teammate Gerrit Cole on Sept. 8, who eventually went on to finish the 2019 season in first place with 32.2 points. Verlander was second with 27.5 points.
After earning 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2020, Verlander underwent Tommy John surgery, sitting out the 2021 season, before rebounding in 2022.
Verlander also now has 225.6 career Box-Toppers points, fifth-most among all players since 1995, when player tracking began. He trails fourth-ranked player Mets pitcher Max Scherzer (232.3) by 6.7 points. Verlander ranks third among active players in career points, first among active AL pitchers, ahead of Zack Greinke of the Royals (221.5).
National League Player of the Day—Cardinals pitcher Jose Quintana struck out seven over six innings, allowing one run, one hit and two walks, in the 7-2 win over the Cubs. Quintana did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Cubs tied the game after he exited.
Quintana earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 5.7 for the season, 34th among NL pitchers.
Quintana had a Box-Toppers game score of +8.0, same as Verlander, but Verlander held the edge to win overall Player of the Day honors because he earned the win in his game, while Quintana picked up the no-decision.
National League Batter of the Day—Ryan McMahon of the Rockies hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in five runs, in the 7-3 win over the Padres.
American League Batter of the Day—Ramon Laureano of the Athletics homered, doubled and went 2-for-5, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 8-7 win over the Angels.
Notable—Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Thursday.
Reynolds (2B 2-4 R BI in the 5-4, 10-inning win over the Brewers) was also NL Batter of the Day Wednesday (HR 3-4 3R BI in the 8-7 win over the Brewers). Reynolds earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points Wednesday and 1.0 point Thursday and has 4.0 points in 2022, 23rd among NL batters.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
