About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Meanwhile, Nick Castellanos of the Reds regains the season Box-Toppers points lead among National League batters. Also, Gerrit Cole of the Yankees maintains his lead among American League pitchers and J.D. Martinez maintains his lead among AL batters.
Box-Toppers weekly player rankings reports are normally posted each Friday, but this week’s report was delayed until after the completion of games Sunday leading into this week’s All-Star break.
deGrom now has 16.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points since the last player rankings report July 1, to maintain his lead ahead of second-place player, Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole (15.4). deGrom also leads NL pitchers ahead of second-place Zack Wheeler of the Phillies (14.1).
National League batters—Nick Castellanos of the Reds regains the lead in the category with 8.0 Box-Toppers points, passing Adam Duvall of the Marlins, who led at the last player rankings report July 1. Duvall falls to second among NL batters with 7.0 points.
Castellanos ranks 26th among all players in 2021 Box-Toppers points.
American League pitchers—Gerrit Cole of the Yankees leads the category for the fourth straight report with 14.4 points, picking up 2.0 points since July 1. He ranks ahead of second-place Tyler Glasnow of the Rays (12.7). Cole ranks second overall.
American League batters—J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox leads for the second straight report with 9.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.5 points since July 1. He ranks ahead of second-place AL batter Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (8.4), who has actually earned only 3.0 points as a designated hitter in 2021—the other 5.4 points were earned as a pitcher.
Martinez ranks 15th among all players.
Top 10 list exits and entrances—Athletics pitcher Chris Bassitt rises to ninth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings this week. He displaces Indians pitcher Aaron Civale, who was among the top 10 (ranked 10th) at the last player rankings report July 1.
The #BT40—The Box-Toppers 40 (#BT40) is made up of the 40 players on Box-Toppers’ four top 10 category lists—AL and NL pitchers and batters. The #BT40 are listed in the chart at the top of this page.
Five players joined the #BT40 this week:
Chris Flexen of the Mariners rises to eighth place among AL pitchers with 8.0 points.
Shohei Ohtani of the Angels rises to second place among AL batters with 8.4 points. (Ohtani is also among the top 10 AL pitchers, ranked seventh. He has earned 3.0 of his points as a batter and 5.4 as a pitcher and only qualified to be listed among batters July 2, when he earned at least 25 percent of his 2021 Player of the Game honors at a batting position. Ohtani has now earned two of his six Player of the Game honors this season at designated hitter, the other four as a starting pitcher.)
Charlie Morton of the Braves rises to eighth place among NL pitchers with 9.7 points.
Kevin Gausman of the Giants rises to 10th place among NL pitchers with 9.7 points.
Nolan Arenado of the Cardinals rises to eighth place among NL batters with 5.0 points.
Those five displace these five players: Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, Ramon Laureano of the Athletics, Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer, Mets pitcher Taijuan Walker and Christian Yelich of the Brewers.
It should be noted that the #BT40 are not the overall top 40 players, but the top 10 in each of four categories (in fact, with Ohtani’s inclusion on two top 10 lists, it actually includes 39 players). The lowest-ranking player among the #BT40 is Trevor Story of the Rockies (4.2 points, 10th among NL batters), who ranks 100th overall.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
