Astros pitcher Cristian Javier is Friday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Friday, Braves pitcher Max Fried rises to sixth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day—Javier struck out 14 over seven innings, allowing one run, one hit and no walks, in the 8-1 win over the Angels.
Javier earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 7.7 for the season, 19th among all players and 10th among American League pitchers.
Javier now has two of the four highest Box-Toppers game scores earned by Player of the Game winners this season. His +18.0 game score Friday is the fourth-highest. In his previous start June 25, he had a game score of +19.0 (7IP 0H 0R BB 13K W in the 3-0 win over the Yankees), the second-highest game score by a Player of the Game winner in 2022.
The highest game score by a Player of the Game winner in 2022 is +20.0 by Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw on April 13 (7IP 0H 0R 0BB 13K W in the 7-0 win over the Twins). Javier’s +18.0 game score Friday ranks just behind the season’s third-ranked +18.0 game score by Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani on June 22 (8IP 2H 0R BB 13K W in the 5-0 win over the Royals). Ohtani’s June 22 game score ranks higher than Javier’s Friday score because Ohtani had more innings pitched—eight vs. seven.
National League Player of the Day—Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin struck out eight over 7 2/3 innings, allowing one run, four hits and no walks, in the 5-1 win over the Padres.
Gonsolin earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 8.7 for the season, 14th among all players and seventh among NL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day—Rowdy Tellez of the Brewers hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 2-for-5, scoring twice and driving in five runs, in the 19-2 win over the Pirates.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
