Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Tuesday, Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom rises to sixth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day—Burnes struck out eight over eight scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 7-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
Burnes earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season and is 21st in season player rankings.
He earned 15.4 points in 2022, 10th among NL pitchers.
American League Player of the Day—Ryan Mountcastle of the Orioles hit two home runs—a grand-slam and a three-run shot—in the 12-8 win over the Athletics. Mountcastle went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in nine runs.
Mountcastle earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, his first points of the season and is 33rd in season player rankings.
Mountcastle had a Box-Toppers game score Tuesday of +10.0, best for a batter so far in 2023, ranking just ahead of the +10.0 game score recorded April 1 by Trayce Thompson of the Dodgers (3HR 3-4 2R 8BI). Mountcastle’s game score ranks higher than Thompson’s because he had more runs batted in—nine vs. eight. It is the highest game score by a batters since May 19, 2022, when Trevor Story of the Red Sox recorded a +12.0 game score (3HR 4-4 5R 7BI in the 12-6 win over the Mariners).
While Mountcastle’s +10.0 game score is highest-ranked among all batters earning Player of the Game honors in 2023, it is 12th-highest overall, behind game scores recorded by pitchers 11 times. Rays pitcher Jeffrey Springs recorded the highest game score of 2023 by a Player of the Game winner so far (+17.0 on April 2). Rays pitcher Drew Rasmussen has recorded two of the 11 highest game scores, the third-highest (+14.0 on April 9) and the 10th-highest (+11.0 on April 3).
National League Batter of the Day—Nelson Velazquez of the Cubs hit a grand slam and doubled, going 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 14-9 win over the Mariners.
American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day Tuesday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Ryan Mountcastle.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
