Rankings

Braves pitcher Chris Sale rises from third to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.

Sale (7IP 4H R BB 8K W in the 8-1 win over the Pirates) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 9.7 for the season. He passes the previous leader, Yankees pitcher Luis Gil (9.7). Though Sale and Gil both have 9.7 points in 2024, Sale ranks higher because he has more 2023 points—8.7 vs. 0.0.

Sale also rises to first among NL pitchers, passing the previous leader, Ranger Suarez of the Phillies (9.4).

Sale regains the Box-Toppers season player rankings lead he held for one day, May 20.

Sale now has 163.0 career Box-Toppers points, 18th among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. He trails 17th-ranked player Roger Clemens (164.8). (It should be noted that Clemens began his career before the advent of Box-Toppers in 1995. Box-Toppers projects he would have about 320 points if his entire career from 1984 were tracked.)

Sale ranks fourth among active, signed players in career points, and second among active NL pitchers, behind Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers (270.4).

Red Sox relief pitcher Justin Slaten made his Box-Toppers debut Sunday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
